Understand
History
In 1903, the government of the colony of Natal decided to establish the first protected area on the Drakensberg, which led to the proclamation of a "Demarcated Forest" in 1905, later considered a hunting reserve. The “National Park of Natal” was formally established in 1916. Several other reserves were proclaimed in the Drakensberg: the “Kamberg Nature Reserve” in 1951, the “Loteni Nature Reserve” in 1953, and the “Kamberg Nature Reserve” Vergelegen” in 1967. The first forest reserve in the region was proclaimed in 1922 – “Cathkin Forest Reserve” (initially around 40,468 ha) - and, between 1927 and 1951, several “National Forests were demarcated to ensure the protection of the water production zones. In 1973, Mdedelelo and Mkhomazi were proclaimed protected areas (“Wilderness Areas”).
has been declared World Heritage Site in 2000.
Landscape
The park is located in the Drakensberg mountain range (which is also known in the IsiZulu language as “uKhahlamba”, meaning “spear barrier”) and is formed by huge basaltic structures and bordered by golden sandstone cliffs. The great diversity of habitats, among the high altitude savannah, with numerous streams, has promoted a great variety of endemic species and protects a great number of species that are globally in danger of extinction.
Flora and fauna
Baualas, goldsmiths, duikers, and the largest of all antelope species, the eland, can be found here. Huge bearded vultures and baboons can be found here too.
