It combines the responsorial song in Guadeloupe Creole, the rhythms played on the drums ka and dancing. In its traditional form, gwoka combines these three areas of expression by valuing individual qualities of improvisation. The participants and the audience form a circle in which the dancers and the soloist take turns entering, facing the drums. The audience claps their hands and sings the chorus imposed by the soloist. Several thousand people regularly practice gwoka at popular open-air parties, where the circle functions as a place to showcase individual talents. The practice and know-how related to the manufacture of drums ka are transmitted informally, in the family and friendly circle, but also more and more in craft workshops and schools of dance and traditional music. The gwoka is one of the most emblematic elements of Guadeloupe society and its contemporary expressions explore new musical, choreographic or sung tracks. It accompanies the highlights of daily life as well as festive, cultural and secular events. It also supports movements of social and political demands. It strengthens identity and provides a feeling of collective valorization and individual pride, by promoting values of conviviality, resistance and dignity. |
