The natural environment of this part of Antigua Island, with its deep and narrow bays surrounded by uplands, provided shelter from hurricanes and was suitable for repairing ships. The construction of this shipyard by the British Navy, would not have been possible without the work of generations of African slaves, since the end of the 18th century.
