1 Lumbini, birthplace of the Buddha | Cultural | (iii), (vi) | Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, was born in 623 BC. AD in the famous gardens of Lumbini and its birthplace has become a place of pilgrimage. Among the pilgrims was the Indian emperor Asoka who had one of his commemorative pillars built there. The site is now a center of pilgrimage centered on the remains associated with the beginning of Buddhism and the birth of the Buddha. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
2 Kathmandu Valley | Cultural | (iii), (iv), (vi) | The cultural heritage of the Kathmandu Valley is illustrated by seven sets of monuments and buildings, covering the full spectrum of historical and artistic achievements that have made the Kathmandu Valley world famous. These seven sets include the Durbar squares of Hanuman Dhoka (Kathmandu), Patan and Bhaktapur, the Buddhist stupas of Swayambhu and Bauddhanath as well as the Hindu temples of Pashupati and Changu Narayan. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
3 Royal Chitwan National Park | Natural | (vii), (ix), (x) | At the foot of the Himalayas, Chitwan is one of the rare undisturbed remains of the “Terai” region which extended over the foothills of India and Nepal. The flora and fauna are very dense there. It is home to one of the last populations of the Asian one-horned rhinoceros and is also one of the last refuges for the Bengal tiger. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
4 Sagarmatha National Park | Natural | (vii) | In a landscape of grandiose mountains where the highest peak in the world, Everest, rises (8 848 m), glaciers and deep valleys, the park is home to rare species, such as the snow leopard and the lesser panda.
