1 Rennell East NaturalixRennell East is located in the southern third of Rennell, the southernmost island of the Solomon Islands. Rennell is the largest elevated coral atoll in the world with its 86 km long and 15 km wide. The site covers approximately 37 000 Ha and a marine sector extending up to three nautical miles. One of the main features of the island is Lake Tegano, the former lagoon of the atoll and the largest lake in the Pacific island (15 500 Ha). It is brackish and contains many rugged limestone islands. Rennell is mainly covered with dense forests, the canopy of which reaches 20 m in height on average. With the marked climatic effects of frequent cyclones, the site is a real natural laboratory for scientific study. It is custom that governs the ownership and management of the site.Dugout canoe Rennell.jpg
