1 The former agricultural site of Kuk Cultural(iii), (iv)The former Kuk agricultural site in Papua New Guinea includes 116 Ha swamps in the west of the island of New Guinea, 1 500 m altitude. Archaeological excavations have revealed that these marshes have been cultivated almost continuously for 7000, even 10,000 years. The site features well-preserved archaeological remains showing the technological development that transformed the exploitation of plants into agriculture around 6,500 years ago. It is an excellent example of the evolution of agricultural practices through the ages from cultivation on hillocks to draining swamps by digging ditches with wooden tools. Kuk is one of the few places in the world where archaeological remains show an independent development of agriculture over seven to ten millennia.Kuk New Guinea 2002.jpg
