1 Pitons management area Natural(vii), (viii)The site of 2 909 Ha, near the city of Soufriere, includes the Pitons, two volcanic needles springing, side by side, from the sea (respectively at 770 m and 743 m height). Gros Piton and Petit Piton are linked by the ridge of Piton Mitan. The volcanic complex of the area has a geothermal field (solfatare) with sulphurous fumaroles and hot springs. Coral reefs cover almost 60% of the site's marine area. One study revealed 168 species of fish, 60 species of cnidarians, including corals, 8 molluscs, 14 sponges, 11 echinoderms, 15 arthropods and 8 annelids. The dominant terrestrial vegetation is tropical rainforest which becomes subtropical rainforest with small areas of dry forest and areas of humid sprite woods on the peaks. At least 148 plant species have been recorded on Gros Piton, 97 on Petit Piton and the intermediate ridge. There are 8 rare tree species. On Gros Piton, there are some 27 species of birds (5 of which are endemic), 3 native rodents, 1 opossum, 3 bats, 8 reptiles and 3 amphibians.The Pitons at Soufriere Saint Lucia.jpg
