background

Halfway between George Town and Bodden Town, just 1 km from Savannah, you drive through this small fishing village. On a small headland jutting out into the sea is Pedro St. James, the 3 hectare remains of a plantation with a restored manor house from the 18th century, also known as Pedro Castle. This place made history for the island. On December 5, 1831, prominent residents of the island met in the Pedro St. James Great House. There it was decided to elect representatives for the five island districts in order to formulate local laws for better government. In May 1835 the abolition of slavery was announced at the same place. It is the oldest known building on the island and is now used as an information center. There you will find a model of the entire facility, architectural drawings and photos.

About 6 km from George Town and 1 km from Pedro is the small, insignificant town of Savannah on the main road. Only the “old” school building at the entrance to the town brought the town into the headlines. During a hurricane in 1932 the surrounding schools were destroyed. A new schoolhouse was painstakingly erected on a large rock. In 1981 the building was no longer needed. At first it was used as a warehouse, then it was to be demolished. But now the village community decided to renovate the building

Tourist Attractions

  • Pedro St. James. Tel.: 947-3329, Fax: 947-2611. Also called Pedro Castle, mansion, is on the list of national treasures. The facilities include a 3-D cinema, a souvenir shop and a small museum. The large garden with a wide view of the sea is regularly used for events. This castle-like building was built in the late 18th century by the Englishman William Eden, who ran a plantation on the adjacent land. At the time there were just 500 people living on the island. The three-story building had 18 cm thick foundation walls, extensive porches, large shutters and floors, and roof tiles made of slate imported from England. Pedro St. James has been used in many ways since it was built more than two centuries ago. It was the courthouse, prison, government meeting house, and restaurant. It survived cyclones, fire, vandalism and, according to popular belief, is bewitched. On December 5, 1831, the decision was made here to form the first elected parliament. On May 3, 1835, the Governor of Jamaica sent Robert Thompson here to declare the end of slavery. In the years that followed, the building was ravaged by hurricanes and fires. In 1877, the main building was struck by lightning and killed the daughter of the house, Mary Jane. It then fell into disuse. In 1910 it was reported that only the original walls remained. The building was renovated by the Hurlston family in 1914 but was then abandoned in 1920. In 1959, part of the property was bought and renovated by Thomas Hubbell. He lived there until 1963. It was then converted into a hotel and restaurant until it fell victim to a fire in 1970. It was rebuilt and again used as a restaurant from 1974 until the late 1980s when it was again damaged by a cyclone and fire. In 1989 the company went bankrupt. Finally, the government bought the property in 1991. For 8 million US dollars, the Canadian company Commonwealth Historic Resource Management Limited rebuilt the facility until 1996 as you can find it today.Open: daily 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.Price: Entry US $ 10.
