The city was founded in 1560 and has a wonderful Baroque architectural ensemble. The Historic Center can be visited on foot. Its rich heritage includes churches and museums.

The city is 157 km from Maceio, by the AL 101-Sul Highway and 120 km from Aracaju via Neopolis (ferry) and 156 km via Igreja Nova.
By airplane
There are no commercial flights to Penedo. The nearest airports are Maceio (MCZ) and Aracaju (AJU).

- Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary, Barão de Penedo Square
- Convent of São Francisco and Church of Santa Maria dos Anjos. Built between the 17th and 18th centuries by Franciscan friars, pioneers in the transmission of the Christian faith, education and art from 1660 onwards. In the Convent complex is Casa São Francisco. Inside, the Museum of Sacred Art.
- Church of Our Lady of the Current, Praça 12 de Abril - Historic Center. Construction from the 18th century, started in 1754, completed 30 years later by the Lemos family, abolitionists who hid fugitive slaves in their secret compartments.
- Rosario dos Pretos Church, Marshal Deodoro Square
- Church of São Gonçalo Garcia dos Homens Pardos, Av. Floriano Peixoto - Historic Center. Construction from the 18th century, started in 1758 in the place where there was a modest chapel built by hermits. See the stonewashed, rococo style, in the sacristy. And, on their altars, life-size wooden images.
- Imperial Palace Museum, Praça 12 de Abril - Historic Center.
- Oratory of the Hanged, Barão de Penedo Square. 18th century construction (1769). This was where prisoners prayed before being executed.
- Seventh of September Theater, Av. Floriano Peixoto, 81 - Historic Center. Construction of the 19th century, inaugurated in 1884. The first theater in Alagoas, it was designed by the Italian architect Luiz Lucarini. At the top of the façade there are statues representing the goddesses of music, painting, poetry and dance.
