Peniche is a place in the Portuguese Centro region.

Peniche (Portuguese pronunciation: [pˈniʃ]) is a Portuguese port city on the peninsula of the same name. The coastline of the peninsula consists for the most part of steep coast with up to 40 m high vertically sloping cliffs. At the end of the peninsula is the Cabo Carvoeiro with a lighthouse and a weather station from Meteomedia. Sunsets are particularly spectacular there, because the offshore archipelago of the Berlengas is always in sight.

By plane

The Lisbon Portela Airport is approx. 98 km away. To the airport postage it is 272 km.

By train

Peniche has no rail connection. The nearest train station is 25 km away in Obidos on the "Linha do Oeste" which begins at Lisbon's Alcântara-Terra train station and ends in Figueira da Foz. It is 82 kilometers by train to Obidos.

By bus

Speech expressos runs up to 11 times a day from the Sete Rios bus station in Lisbon in 95 minutes to Peniche and back.

In the street

Peniche can be reached in around 80 minutes from Lisbon Airport. The journey is initially via the A8 Autoestradas do Atlântico in the direction of Leiria - a section is subject to a toll (4.75 euros). Then later via the IP6.

From Porto Airport it is 272 km with a driving time of around 2.5-3 hours. There are several toll sections on this route.

Beach

The wide, elongated beach of Peniche stretches for several kilometers north of the city center.

Surfing

Peniche is well known and loved among European surfers. Peniche and the surrounding area offer countless surf sports for surfing. The most famous surf spot is Supertubos - south of the harbor. There, when the conditions are favorable, the waves pile up up to 5-6 m directly on the beach and the surfers disappear briefly in the "pipeline" before they come out of it again. The waves there are so perfect that every year in October the world's best surfers visit it on their 11 station tour around the world. North of the Peniche peninsula, endless sandy beaches stretch along the coast to the Obidos lagoon. There you will find excellent surf spots for beginners and advanced surfers everywhere.

  • The offshore archipelago Berlengas is ideal for a day trip. There is a small fort, an even smaller beach and lots and lots of seagulls to see. There is also a campsite on the island. The overnight stay is booked and paid for at the tourist information office at the port in Peniche. There is no running fresh water.
  • Day trips can be made by bus Óbidos do.
