Philipsburg is a city in Sint Maarten.
background
Philipsburg was founded in 1763 by the island commander, a Scotsman in the Dutch service, John Philips, on a narrow strip of land about 1.5 km long between the sea and the salt lake. Since the Groot Baai recorded brisk trade over time, the authorities felt compelled to take precautions for the further development of the bay. Along the isthmus between the port and the salt lake, square parcels of 38 meters (125 feet) side length were measured and assigned to the population. This was the hour of birth of Philipsburg, and these even property boundaries shape the image of the city to this day. Two somewhat wider streets run parallel to the bank: Frontstreet and Backstreet. Countless narrow streets, called "Steeg or Steegjes", form the north-south connection. Up until the 1950s, the large salt warehouses in Backstreet testified to this industry, which was an important source of income for the city for about a century.
With the end of the salt industry, tourism began. City personalities, led by A. Claude Wathey and Clem Labega, invited American travel journalists to promote the island. In those days there was only one inn, the Seaview Hotel with five rooms. Today's Pasanggrahan Hotel was originally the royal guest house with three rooms. In 1955, the Little Bay Beach Hotel opened with 24 rooms. It wasn't until 1960 that the city's first bank opened.
According to the historian Mathias Voges, there were only a few shops on Front Street in the 1960s. In addition, two small hotels, two churches and two schools were found in Philipsburg. All other buildings were residential buildings. At the time, only about 1,500 people lived in the Dutch part of the island, there were just under 400 cars. With the beginning of tourism, however, lifestyle changed dramatically. In the 1970s there was a strong trend towards leaving the city and building new ones outside. So the former residential buildings on Frontstreet became commercial buildings. The L’Escargot restaurant can now be found in Vosge’s own birthplace. At the moment, Front Street is being rebuilt for $ 5.4 million.
- Sint Maarten Guavaberry Company, they import rum from the islands of Antigua, Barbados, Guadeloupe, Jamaica and Trinidad. Under the brand name Blackbeard Five Star Rums, clear, brown and dark rum is bottled with 40% alcohol. Four rum liqueurs with 35% alcohol are produced under the same brand name. Five Caribbean rums with 40% alcohol are bottled under the brand name Cariba Nativa.
beaches

- Groot Baai. A narrow sandy beach in front of the island's capital. The plots almost reach the water. After the cruise jetty was built, the port there had to be deepened. The sand was used to fill the beach in front of the capital, which made it considerably wider. In some places a wooden footbridge has also been built along the bank. This work has not yet been completed. This was a big step forward for tourism. Today there are a number of beach bars on the beach.
- Guana Baai, Atlantic coast. A beautiful, but little-visited bay with no shade and lots of rocks on the shore. The strong Atlantic swell is a paradise for body boarders and surfers. Swimmers and divers are warned of strong underwater currents.
- Little Baai. Protected bay with black sand beach, hotel beach. This is where the locals from Philipsburg meet at the weekend.
getting there
In the street
From the international airport there is only one road that leads to Philipsburg. It is relatively well developed and signposted. Travel time is 30 to 45 minutes.
By boat
On the east side of the great Great Bay there are two marinas, 1 Bobby's Marina, one 2 Cruise docks and the port facilities. The two marinas also have berths for large yachts. Various companies also depart from there with their boats. The cruise jetty is relatively new and will be expanded further. During the season you can find all the big organizers there, whose ships sail through the Caribbean. Ferry boats run regularly between Philipsburg and the islands of Saba and Saint-Barthélemy.

Tourist Attractions
- 1 Captain Hodge Pier , Wathey Square and Courthouse. The former parade ground and the courthouse form the center of the small town.
- The courthouse was built in 1793 as a residence for commander John Philips. At the same time, the scales, the post office and the meeting room of the island government were housed there. The fire brigade was also stationed there at times. In 1819 it was badly damaged by a cyclone. In 1826 it was able to be rebuilt. The bell tower was added. The building served as a prison until 1937. In 1964 island governor Lt. Beaujon remodel the upper floor. It was not until 1992 that the post office received new rooms in the basement. After a thorough renovation in 1994-95, the court was housed there. The pineapple was placed there as a symbol of the island's hospitality. Today it is one of the oldest buildings on the island.
- 2 university on the island in the salt lake, University of St. Maarten (USM), Soualiga Road 1, Tel. 542-5171, 542-3156. The university dates back to the 1980s when the Mullet Bay Resort needed well trained staff. A collaboration was established with Johnson & Wales University in the USA. The Mullet Bay Institute was established and teachers were sent to Sint Maarten. As early as 1986, people who were not employees of the Mullet Resort were trained. The great success of the company led to the establishment of USM in 1994. In 1999 the university buildings were destroyed by cyclone Jenny. New construction will take place in several phases. At the moment you can get a degree in economics and arts at the university and train to be a primary school teacher.
- The salt lagoon: The value of the salt lake was recognized in 1831 and the residents in the neighborhood were given permission to build walls and large salt pans there. During the hot summer months, 500 people were busy extracting salt there. In 1862 the salt factory was built on Sucker Garden Road. However, the plant never worked to the complete satisfaction of the owners, so that operation was stopped again after ten years. In 1949, the salt production was completely stopped there, reasons: poor water evaporation, environmental pollution and high losses of salt due to rainfall. In the last few decades they have started to fill up about a third of the salt lake. This gained building land because the city of Philipsburg continues to expand.
- Vineyard: The winery is located on the easternmost edge of Philipsburg. The “van Romodts” family is closely related to this. The van Romondts from the Dutch Uetrecht are the ancestors. Diederik Joahannes van Romondt, born on February 16, 1781 in Amsterdam, came to Philipsburg in 1801, where he died on April 19, 1849. From 1820 to 1840 he was the island's governor. He was a devout Methodist and through him the church in Philipsburg grew very quickly. The Vineyard Plantation House was built in 1872 by Louis A. van Romondt. It was also he who brought the first car to the island in 1917. In 1938 the property was acquired by a Miss J. C. Buncamper.
- 3 Point Blanche Prison , there you can find the remains of Fort Bel-Air, the Sint Peter's Battery and other fortifications, the so-called Spanish Fort. Most of these historical structures had to give way to the modern buildings of the marina.
- 4 Fort Willem received its current name in 1816. It was built in 1801 by the English under the name of Fort Trigge during the British occupation. Today it is easily recognizable, there are the transmission masts of a television station.
- 5 Fort Amsterdam was built in 1631 by the Dutch on the headland between Great Bay and Little Bay. The Spaniards captured it as early as 1633 and expanded it considerably. In 1644 Peter Stuyvesant tried unsuccessfully to recapture and lost a leg in the fighting. Before the Spaniards left the island in 1648, they destroyed most of the parts that they had built up after 1633. In 1737 it was given its current name by the Dutch. It was used as a signal station until 1950. From there you can see the whole of Philipsburg.
- 6 Sint Maarten Museum , Frontstreet 7, Tel. / Fax 542-4917. Island history museum with museum and souvenir shop.
