The most important economic factor in the industrial city Phu Mỹ is the petrochemical industry. This is due to the oil deposits in the Mekong Delta, e.g. the Bạch Hổ oil field ' (White Tiger Oil Field). With the help of the natural gas obtained there, four gas-fired power plants with a total output of 3,900 MW are operated in Phú Mỹ; they generate around a third of Vietnam’s electricity. Other branches of industry are the cement and steel industries.

Phú Mỹ has the port Cai Mep International Terminal, it lies on the banks of the Thi Vai River and is suitable for deep-sea vessels. This port serves as a replacement for the former deep sea port of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City).
