Pisa - a medium-sized city in the middle Italy (region Tuscany), situated on the River Arno, 13 km from the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

A world-famous city with an ancient history, at its peak in the 11th century, with a well-deserved university and, of course, the famous "Leaning Tower". There is much more in Pisa for those tourists who want to immerse themselves in the unforgettable atmosphere of Tuscany.

Worth seeing

  • Miracle Square (Piazza dei Miracoli or otherwise Piazza del Duomo) - a large square with the cathedral, baptistery and the Leaning Tower. In 1987 Piazza dei Miracoli was typed on UNESCO World Cultural Heritage
  • Leaning Tower (Torre pendente) - the construction of which began in 1173 as the bell tower of the cathedral, however, due to the sandy ground, it began to tilt during construction
  • Cathedral - built in the years 1063-1118, then rebuilt in 1604 after a fire in 1595. The facade of the cathedral in the Lombard style is decorated with colored sandstone and tiles of glass and majolica. The most valuable monuments are the southern door made of bronze (1180) by Bonannus, the mosaic Christ in the Majesty (1302) in the apse and the pulpit (1302-1311) by Giovanni Pisano
  • Baptistery - several architectural styles can be identified in the building, Romanesque in the body of the building, Gothic in the pinnacles decorating the facades, and the Renaissance in semicircular arcades. The building was designed by Diotisalvi, while the construction was completed by Giovanni Pisano - Nicola Pisano. Inside, the marble baptismal font by Guido Bigaralli and the pulpit by Nicola Pisano stand out
  • church of Santa Maria della Spina - a small church located on the banks of the Arno built in 1230 and rebuilt in the Gothic style in 1323. In 1871 the church was pulled down and moved a few meters. The name of the church comes from a relic of a thorn, the crown of thorns of Jesus, which was stored here once
  • Piazza dei Cavallieri - square surrounded by medieval buildings
  • Museo dell'Opera del Duomo - exhibiting the treasures of the cathedral and the baptistery
  • Museo Nazionale di San Matteo - a museum with a rich collection of Tuscan sculpture and painting, in particular by artists associated with Pisa and Florence
  • Museo delle Sinopie - the museum exhibits sketches of frescoes that decorated the walls of Camposanto. These frescoes were destroyed during the bombing raids during World War II (in 1944)
  • Camposanto - necropolis in the northern part of Campo dei Miracoli near the cathedral
