background

The place Plau arose from the Slavic rafting place with the name Plawe. It lies on the banks of the Plauer See, which is also responsible for the addition on the lake. The place is first mentioned in a document in 1235, in this document the town charter is confirmed, which was granted by Prince Heinrich Borwin I in 1225/26.

Here, in 1287, Prince Nikolaus II von Werle built a castle on a raised island. This was better fortified against robber barons in 1448/49 and finally expanded into a fortress in the 1540s. The important trade route from Brandenburg to Rostock runs past this castle, and this is where the city with its grid-shaped street grid emerged. The three-nave hall church, built with bricks, also dates from the 13th century. A bridge over the Elde is first mentioned in 1295.

During the Thirty Years War, the city was besieged several times and badly affected. After 1660, most of the fortress was razed. In 1756 almost all of the medieval buildings were destroyed by a fire in the town. After the fire, most of the houses were built in the style of the Lower Saxony houses.

In the 19th century the industrial age began with a machine factory, an iron foundry and a cloth factory. A lime kiln and a brickworks followed later. From 1845 a steamship sailed the lake to Röbel / Müritz. The railroad reached Plau am See in 1882.
