background

Plymouth is the oldest settlement on the island. The fortified place was also the island's first capital. In 1628 the Dutch attempted a first settlement, but were driven out by the Carib Indians after a short time. It was not until 1632 that a second group of Dutch could establish a permanent settlement at this point. They built Fort Nieuw Walcheren to protect them.

In 1654 about 600 settlers from the Latvian Courland came to Plymouth. They named the place Jakobusstadt and the fortification Fort Jacobus.

From 1658 to 1664 Courland Bay was again owned by the Dutch. The fortification was now named Fort Beveren.

It was not until 1768 that today's Plymouth was laid out in a checkerboard fashion by the English. Across the bay, construction of Fort James began on the foundations of Fort Jacobus at the same time. Today few remains are found in the grass.

The largest place on the west coast always seems a bit sleepy. The few sights are only a few hundred meters away from each other.
