Pilsen and the Cathedral of San Bartolomeo in the background.

Plzen or Plzeň in Czech language is a city of Central Europe, located in Czechia, in Western bohemia, famous for the Pilsener beer industry that reaches every country in the world. The city has 165,000 inhabitants and is divided into three districts.

Understand

The city of Pilsen was founded in the 13th century by King Wenceslas II of Bohemia. You can see the oldest church in the city called San Bartolomé which was built in 1292. The tower of this church measures around 102 m. In the Middle Ages the churches were Gothic, which highlights the inconspicuous colors, large windows for supposedly God to illuminate the people and high towers and domes to be closer to God.

In Pilsen you can not only see a Gothic city from the Middle Ages, but also a more contemporary sector that emerged with the industrialization of Europe in the 18th century when large institutions such as an academy for engineers were founded. It was the inventor Frantisek Krizik who introduced the automotive world to Pilsen. The Škoda factory is currently located in the city.

Watch

Pilsen is a city that is surrounded by nature, the forests of West Bohemia and even thermal places, being an ideal city for tourism where history can be mixed with the present, the fun and relaxation of these thermal waters. It preserves important monuments such as:

  • St. Bartholomew's Cathedral (Katedrála svatého Bartoloměje)
  • Pilsner Urquell Brewery (Plzeňský Prazdroj)
