Port Howe is a city in Cat Island.
background
Port Howe was named after the first English commander of the American Freedom Army, Admiral James Howe. It was founded around 1670 by a small group of English settlers from Bermuda. They made their living robbing stranded ships. In 1717 and in the following years the settlement was repeatedly raided by Spaniards and pirates. In 1783 the residents received reinforcements from Florida loyalists under the leadership of Lt. John Wilson. Together they built a new village called Carlyle, in the vicinity of which several plantations were created. Remains of fortifications from that time can still be found today, which were intended to protect the place and port from pirates. The overgrown cemetery is on the west side. There is a gas station in the village. Boats, fishing, and diving can be found on the beach at Greenwood Inn.
