Portimão is a Portuguese Port city in the Algarve. It has the third largest port in Portugal and is one of the economic centers of the Algarve. Since the decline of the fishing industry in the 1970s, tourism has grown to become the most important economic factor. Portimão is an important port for cruise ships and a ferry port for connections to Madeira and the Canaries. On the one at home here Autódromo Internacional do Algarve Motorsport races of the FIM Superbike World Championship and the European Le Mans Series take place regularly.

Portimão is located on the coastline famous for its rock formations Barlavento, the one in the immediate vicinity is particularly well-known Praia da Rocha.

The city lies at the mouth of the Arade in the Atlantic. It is the administrative seat of the district of the same name, to which the smaller localities belong Alvor and Mexilhoeira Grande.

The city is connected to the Portuguese rail network via the Linha do Algarve. The 1 railway station is north of the city center. over Do it and the more distant Faro exist connection after Lisbon.
