Portmore is a city in Jamaica.

background

After the decline of the sugar industry in the great plains west of Kingston and around Spanish Town, the Portmore Land Development Company was founded in the 1960s. Initially, this company built 18 km of dams to protect against the floods of the Rio Cobre. Then the 5 km long "Causeway" was built, which connects the town of Portmore with Kingston. Low-lying areas were filled in, and quarries were built in the Henderson Hills to the south.

The “Causeway” road has been expanded to six lanes as part of the “Highway 2000” project; use today is subject to a charge.

Out of the 24 municipalities in the area, Portmore emerged as a suburb of both Kingston and Spanish Town. On the southern outskirts, a few ruins are reminiscent of the fishing village of Port Henderson. To the north at the mouth of the Rio Cobre is the Caymanas Park racecourse.

In 1977 the Urban Development Corporation (UDC) took over the further planning and construction of houses for low-wage earners and the middle class. In 1989 there were already 16,000 houses. In 2000 Portmore consisted of 60 different parts of the parish with an estimated 170,000 inhabitants. Some of the more significant and well-known parishes include Braeton, Braeton Newtown, Edgewater, Garvey Meade, Greater Portmore, Gregory Park, Hellshire, Independence City, Naggo Head, Passage Fort, Port Henderson, Portmore Pines, and Waterford. Several large shopping centers were built for the growing population.

A further development to the south-west is being planned. Portmore there currently extends to the foot of the Hellshire Hills. These flat limestone mountains have not yet been developed and form a retreat for wild boars and iguanas.
