Tourist Attractions

The old town of Porto-Vecchio with a citadel typical of the Corsican cities offers all kinds of shopping, gastronomy and tourist souvenir shops, but no really breathtaking sights. That is why the city is far less crowded than for example Calvi in the west of the island or Bonifacio in the very south.

activities

The real surfing paradise is in Bonifacio, but in the flat, wave-poor 1 Golfo di Sogno likes to windsurf and kite surf.

A sailboat and surfboard rental with a sailing school can be found at 2 Cala Rossa beach.

shop

In the commercial areas around the city you will find some of the gigantic hypermachés with a large variety of regional foods.

Fresh fish from local fisheries is available in the 1 Poissonerie du Circé (is supplied by the sloop of the same name). But also the fish departments in the 2 Geant and in 3 E. Leclerc have a good selection of fresh, local fish and are open longer than the fish shop.

Castellu d’Arraggiu with a view of the Gulf of Porto-Vecchio

In Porto-Vecchio, some particularly attractive routes start in the mountains in the interior of the island, for example to the Col de Bavella.

  • The much visited 1 Bonifacio has a rugged rocky bay as a natural harbor. The narrow, winding old town is enthroned high on the chalk cliffs (around 25 km south).
  • The 2 "Castellu d’Arraggiu" excavation siteArchaeological site is after the Castellu di Cucuruzzu the best preserved site of the Torre culture in Corsica (from around 1600 BC). The destination is about 10 km north of Porto-Vecchio.
  • The Torre culture takes its name from the town 3 Torrewhere the remains of a cult site were found. Unspectacular, but easy to get to. Offers an impressive view of the Gulf of Porto-Veccio. Early risers can enjoy a unique sunrise here.
  • Longer but worthwhile trip by car: The 4 Bavella PassBavella Pass with the Bavella Pass with the Bavella Pass with the (1218 m) is definitely worth a crossing. A rugged mountain range, also known as the "Korische Dolomites", towers over the pass. More frequented, especially in the high season. Parking fee in summer € 4 / day (as of 2017).
  • The 5 Piscia di GalloPiscia di Gallo in the Wikipedia encyclopediaPiscia di Gallo in the media directory Wikimedia CommonsPiscia di Gallo (Q3389197) in the Wikidata database ("Hahnenpiss") is a waterfall worth seeing. The hike there is quite busy during the season, but the walk is worth it. Sturdy shoes are recommended. At the D 368 from L'Ospedale to the Bavella Pass.
