Map of Portree

background

The name of this small (and only) port city goes back to a visit by the Scottish King James V in 1540.

getting there

The city is very well connected to the local road network and has the A87 also to access to the national trunk road system. Due to its central location, Portree is ideally positioned as a starting point for other activities and can always be reached quickly for a day trip. There is a parking lot for day visitors directly on the market square.

As the main town on the island, Portree is a traffic junction and can be easily reached by bus from other parts of the country (see also arrival in the island article here). The bus company Stagecoach has set up an island-wide bus network, so you can reach almost all places on Skye with at most one change, even if the waiting time for a bus can sometimes be quite long. The bus station is in Somerled Square.

Even if you can make excursions by ship from here, there is no ferry connection to Portree.

Sometimes the town is also a destination for cruise ships. You then anchor in the Bay of Portree and bring their passengers ashore with tender boats 1 Ferry terminal.

mobility

Portree is best explored on foot.
