Portsmouth is a city in Dominica.

background

This place, about an hour's drive north of Roseau, was used by the Carib Indians Ouyouhao called. Even today it is simply called Grand Anse by many locals. In 1765 it was planned and measured as the island capital by the royal engineer John Simpson. The layout was like a chessboard with a central parade ground, today's Benjamin’s Park. The administration and court building was planned on the eastern side. Located between two rivers, the area was swampy and the climate was very unhealthy. Already in 1770 there were more empty houses than inhabited ones. In 1768 it was decided to move the capital to Roseau. Today the second largest city on the island still has the charm of a secluded village without the hustle and bustle. Bay Street (now renamed Michael Douglas Boulevard) is the main street with shops, restaurants, and guest houses. It's only busier on Saturdays, when it's market day.

Prince Rupert Bay and the North River have been visited by sailing ships since Columbus' second voyage, later by the Royal Navy and by whaling boats, which supplied themselves with fresh water and wood. In the dry season, ox carts came from nearby towns and loaded barrels with drinking water.

To the north, on the other side of the North River, lies the district Lagon. They tower on the north side of Prince Rupert Bay Cabrits Hill as a landmark far out into the sea. North of the Cabrits Hill is the beautiful beach of Douglas Bay. The Carib Indians called the area there "Malalia". The English changed the name in memory of Admiral Sir James Douglas.

To the northeast of Lagoon you can still find the remains of a railway in the form of bridges and viaducts. It was part of the Forest Company Limited founded in 1910. The wood was transported by rail to the sawmill at the mouth of the Indian River.

In the south, the Indian River separates the plain from the town Glanvillia. On the Indian River you can take a boat inland for US $ 12.

The place Glanvilla and the southern surroundings were acquired as a plantation by the French Jacques Blanchard before 1765. This first owner was from the Picardy area. He gave the river and the plantation its current name Picard. When the island fell into English hands in 1763, parts of the plantation were distributed to the English. An area of 20 hectares at the mouth of the Picard River has been reserved for the Navy. In 1827, 75 slaves were still working on the Picard plantation. They produced 50 tons of sugar and 4,000 liters of rum. In the following years it became the property of the Glanville’s, and later it belonged to the Davies and Potter families. The latter sold to the chocolate factory Rowntree & Co., which later sold over 530 hectares of banana fields to Geest Industries. In 1978 this land was sold to the government and resold in small parts as building land. The American Ross University is also located there. Today the district of Picard is a fast growing settlement. The entire infrastructure is concentrated at Ross University.

Portsmouth is the birthplace of the national historian Lennox Honeychurch. Also the former Prime Minister Rosie Douglas comes from this place.

From Portsmouth one of the most scenic roads leads across the north of the island in an easterly direction to the Atlantic coast to Calibishie.

If you leave Portsmouth in a northerly direction, you pass the Cabrit Peninsula and reach Douglas Bay, 3 km from Portsmouth Tanetane. The villages follow further north in a short distance Toucari, Clifton and Capucin. From Tanetane, the road along the north coast to Penville was expanded and opened to traffic in 2004.
