Porvoo (Swedish Borgå) is located on the Gulf of Finland in Southern Finland.

background

Porvoo received city rights from the Swedish King Magnus Erikkson in 1346 and is thus behind Turku the second oldest city Finland. As of 1550 Helsinki was founded, Gustav Vasa ordered the citizens of the city to move there. However, the subsequent decline only lasted until 1579, when city privileges were renewed that year. In 1708 the Russians destroyed the city.

getting there

Buses run from the central bus station in in every 15-30 minutes Helsinki to Porvoo. The normal bus costs € 8.70 and takes 65 minutes. Since the express bus costs € 11.20 with 55 minutes travel time, it is probably not worth the extra charge - the express buses only stop in Porvoo and then continue east.

The museum railway is located in Porvoo Porvoon Museorautatie, which maintains historic vehicles of the Finnish State Railways, including some "Lättähattu" DM7 rail buses. In the summer months they run once a week (Saturdays) from Helsinki to Porvoo. For the 1.5-hour journey you pay 10 €, which is paid to the conductor during the train journey. On particularly sunny days, it is advisable to be at the train station in good time to secure a seat.

Another way to get here is the M / S Runeberg ship.

Tourist Attractions

The medieval-looking, colorful wooden houses and narrow streets of the picturesque old town (under monument protection) were not built until 1760 after a major fire. The former town hall from 1764 houses a museum. The rust-red salt reservoirs (18th century) on the banks of the Porvoonjoki are also attractive. The Gothic cathedral from 1418 with its red brick gable is the city's landmark. Unfortunately this year the old wooden roof caught fire due to arson and burned down. The Finnish national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg lived in Porvoo. A museum has been set up in his home.
