Geographical notes
Bosnian Posavina is located along the Sava River. There Posavina in an extended sense it is a region that extends far beyond the borders of Bosnia, occupying those parts of the Slovenia, Croatia is Serbia which are located in the basin of the Sava River.
Background
The Bosnian Posavina was hit hard by the Yugoslav wars of 1992-1995. The region became virtually deserted as locals fled to neighboring regions and most of their homes were destroyed. Only a small part of the former inhabitants have returned there.
Culture and traditions
The region traditionally had a Croatian majority, while today it is predominantly inhabited by Serbs.
Suggested readings
Most of the current inhabitants of the region are of Serbian origin, hence the Serbian is the main language. Although the Croatian and the Bosnian they are mutually intelligible with Serbian, in fact most of the differences between the three languages are academic. Be prepared to decipher a few sentences in Cyrillic as it is the script of choice among the Serbs of Bosnia.
