The Post Oak Savannah begins at the convergence of the Piney Woods and Blackland Prairie in the northeast and stretches down past the Brazos River Valley to include the space between Austin and Houston. It is flanked on the west by the Blackland Prairie and Hill Country, on the northeast by the Piney Woods, on the south east by the Gulf Coast region, and on the southwest by the South Texas Plains.

Activities include canoeing the San Marcos River, hiking, biking, swimming, and tubing. Primitive and improved camp sites are available, as is a group picnic shelter (all by reservation at the park office, call ahead during the busy summer months).
