Pouso Alegre is a city in Brazil in the south of the state Minas Gerais.
The first Europeans reached the city area in 1596 in search of gold. After they found what they were looking for, they founded a settlement called "Matosinho do Mandu" or "Bom Jesus do Matozinhos". In 1797 it was renamed Pouso Alegre, which roughly means "nice stay". In 1831 Pouso Alegre was raised to the rank of town.
In 2004 the city had about 120,000 inhabitants. It is 832 m above sea level.
