History

The Tatra Poviat was discovered by the inhabitants of other regions of the country only in the first half of the 19th century. In just a few of its decades, Skalne Podhale became one of the main centers of Polish spiritual life. It was a Mecca for the most outstanding artists and a bridgehead of independent Poland.

The oldest town at the foot of the Polish Tatra Mountains is buriedwhich was granted the location privilege in 1578. The beginnings of settlement in the area of Skalne Podhale, however, date back to the 14th century. Shepherds and hunters were the first to enter the Tatras, bringing with them customs and shepherding rites from the Balkans. In the 15th century, miners began to penetrate the Tatra Mountains (the last mine was built in the Tatra Mountains in 1876). However, for centuries the basis of the existence of highlanders was primarily the land, and the primary source of income was pastoralism.

The beauty of the Tatra nature and the originality of the spiritual and material culture of the highlanders attracted more and more Poles to Podtatrze. This gave an impulse to the development of settlements that were formed at the foot of the Tatra Mountains from the end of the 16th century. The development of this settlement led to the creation of an agglomeration, which today, from Bukowina Tatrzańska, through Zakopane to Kościelisko, surrounds Polish Tatra Mountains. In 1998, for the first time in history, Zakopane became the seat of the Tatra poviat authorities.
