Territories and tourist destinations

Urban centers

Gulf of Chiriqui

  • 1 David (San José de David) - Administrative capital, David is, with its 125,000 inhabitants, the third largest city in country. Since the center is less than an hour from Paso Canoas, the border crossing with the Costa Rica, you may be tempted to stop by if you are tired of the journey but David does not have much to hold the interest of leisure travelers and is dominated by a sweltering heat. It may be wiser to choose to stay overnight in Playa Barqueta, equipped with a good hotel, the resort Las Olas.

Cordillera Central

  • 2 Bajo Boquete - Base for a visit to the nearby "Volcan Baru National Park", Bajo Boquete, located 40km from David, has quickly become a favorite destination of international tourism thanks above all to its enchanting position in a green valley crossed by the Rio Caldera and in the shadow of the Barú volcano. In Bajo Boquete you will find not many young people but a host of retired nationalities Canadian is American which becomes more nourished from year to year. Don't miss the Flower Fair and coffee ("Feria de las Flores y del Café" or "Feria de Boquete"), 507 730 9466, fax: 507 720 1600. Exhibition event held annually in the Boquete neighborhood.
  • 3 Bambito - Rural village with a bucolic air 18 km north of Volcán, Bambito is dominated by mountain peaks covered with dense vegetation and an intense green. Like the nearby towns of Cerro Punta is Guadalupe placed even higher, Bambito is equipped with hotels, mostly chalets surrounded by greenery and is the ideal base for excursions to La Amistad International Park.
  • 4 Volcán - Volcán is a village at about 1,400m. s.l.m. and with a climate of eternal spring, it is 34 km from La Concepción on the Pan-American road. Its landscapes are dominated by the imposing bulk of the Barù volcano with its summit perpetually shrouded in clouds. There are many walking tours starting from the village. The most interesting is the one for "Lagunas de Volcán", two bodies of water surrounded by exuberant vegetation.

Other destinations

  • 1 Isla Ensenada - A couple of miles from the mainland, Isla Ensenada is a place exclusively for surfers who stay at the only campsite on the island, Morro Negrito Surf Camp.
  • La Amistad International Park - Unlike its counterpart in Costa Rica, the Panamanian section of the cross-border park is easily accessible and you can choose from a variety of trails without difficulty along the way (Sendero Puma Verde, Sendero La Cascada, etc.). Another interesting excursion is the one to the Finca Dracula http://www.fincadracula.com/ , a company specialized in the production of orchids located at 2,000 m. altitude (dracula is, precisely, the name of a species of orchid),.
  • Marine National Park of the Gulf of Chiriquí - Established in 1994 to protect the islands emerging in the Gulf of Chiriquí. These are groups of small islands of coral origin and often covered with mangrove thickets. These include the privately owned Islas Secas with a luxurious hotel. Boca Brava is the largest island facing the mainland and reachable by water taxi from Boca Chica. Count a couple of hotels. Isla Bolaños is renowned for its white beaches. The park's islands are a paradise for those who love fishing. Accommodation and equipped centers are dedicated to them. The retirees of the park practice fishing in the waters of the park Bajo Boquete, locality referred to in the next section.
  • 2 Playa Las Lajas - About 70 km from the capital Las Lajas is a long beach free from strong sea currents and therefore suitable for bathing but with few and very modest forms of accommodation.
