The province of Bolivar has an area of approx. 3,250 km² with around 180,000 inhabitants and is the capital Guaranda. The province is named after the South American liberation fighter Simón Bolívar. Around two thirds of the population lives in rural areas.
The most important branch of the economy is agriculture, mainly family-run small businesses produce mainly potatoes, corn, vegetables, beans, but also coffee, cocoa, bananas and oranges and also some livestock. There are also a few large farms.
