Ptuj (German: Pettau) is the oldest city Slovenia.

Ljubljana International Airport (Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport, LJU) is located 133 km west of Ptuj.

Ptuj is located approx. 30 km southeast of Maribor, Slovenia's second largest city, and can be easily reached by car via the A4 (E59) motorway.

  • Old town and castle
  • Thermal bath. Large outdoor swimming pool.
  • Ptuj Castle. The very well-preserved old town is dominated by the stately medieval Ptuj Castle.
    The current building was in the 11th / 12th. Century started. Various museums and exhibitions are worth seeing in the castle: Ptuj Ormož National Museum with an ethnographic exhibition; Musical instrument collection; Weapon collection; Exhibition of the famous traditional Ptuj carnival dolls and masks. There is a beautiful view of the old town from the castle grounds.
  • Town square (Mestni trg): centrally located square with the Florian monument (erected in 1745), town hall (early 20th century) and representative town houses
  • Slovenski trg: central square with old town hall, Orpheus monument (symbol of the city: 5 m high monolith made of marble), city tower and the city theater
  • City tower (Mestni stolp): It dates from the 16th century. The 54 m high tower was part of the former Ptuj fortifications.
  • City Church Sveti Jurij (on Slovenski trg): mixture of Romanesque and Gothic, remarkable high altar and carved Gothic choir stalls; around the church there are tombstones from the 13th to the 18th century
  • Minorite Monastery (am Minoritski trg): the monastery was founded in the 13th century, destroyed by air raids during the war in 1944 and rebuilt true to the original
  • Dominican monastery (am Muzejski trg): founded in 1231, beautiful cloister from the 15th century; since 2010 the culture and congress house has been housed in the monastery building; the former monastery with refectory, church, chapel and crypt can be visited.

Museums:

  • Ptuj Ormož Provincial Museum (in Ptuj Castle) (www.pmpo.si) (adult admission: € 8.00): one of the largest and most visited museums in Slovenia. It includes archaeological, ethnological, cultural and historical departments and collections as well as an exhibition space for contemporary visual arts and a library
  • Exhibition of traditional carnival dolls and masks (in the castle): The big carnival festival in Ptuj (Kurentovanje) begins one week before Mardi Gras Sunday with the big parade. The performers (Kurenti) traditionally wear masks with horns, long red tongues, and sheepskin coats and heavy bells around their waists. They drive away evil and usher in spring. The move attracts up to 60,000 visitors.
