Petra is an ancient Nabathean city, south of the Jordan, classified in Unesco heritage.

Understand

Petra is the name of the ancient Nabathean city and archaeological site. The new city (where you will sleep) is called Wadi Musa.

The "city center" (obeslique roundabout?) Is about 3 or 4 km from the entrance to the site. This is where you will find restaurants, grocery stores, bakeries etc ...

The city then spreads out to the gates of the site. The closer you get to the entrance, the more expensive and sometimes luxurious the hotels will be and the fewer shops you will find to stock up on your days of sightseeing.

To go

  • regular public buses from Amman via the desert highway (h, 3 JD).

Circulate

Taxis traveling between the ruins of Petra and the town of Wadi Musa should cost no more than JD 2.

How many days to stay in Petra ?
First of all from a financial point of view it is more profitable to visit the site for 3 days (the 2e and 3e days each costing only 5JD more)

Then, if you have the time of course, it is really interesting to plan 2 or even 3 days. Note that nothing is defined for those who wish to visit the site for more than 3 days but some visitors may have entered a 4e, 5e 6e... days with the 3-day ticket.

In a full day on the site you will have time to visit (at a running pace) the main sights and temples of the site. By staying longer you will have the opportunity to stroll off the beaten track, to leave the most borrowed paths. , to spend time with the Bedouins etc ...

The magic of Petra lies (in my opinion) in three points:

  1. The famous (and magnificent) temples and monuments carved into the rock
  2. An extraordinary natural site and perhaps unique in the world (cliffs, canyons, rocks with multiple color variations ...)
  3. The kindness and hospitality of the Bedouins who, after trying to sell you a camel ride or a piece of craftsmanship, will always be ready to offer you a glass of tea in the shade of a cave in a well-known corner of 'them alone ... but for that you have to have time to devote to them.

In conclusion, being satisfied only with the visit of the monuments and sacrificing the 2 other points will not allow you to appreciate Petra at its true value.

Some rather expensive restaurants inside the site.

You can also buy packages of cakes, snacks and bottles of water on site (count that everything will be at least 2 or 3 times more expensive than if you do your shopping in town)

The most interesting in my opinion is therefore to go shopping in town (the day before or the morning of your visit) to be able to have a picnic on the spot (you will easily find isolated spots even at the height of the tourist season). water for your day.The concern of this solution is obviously that you will have to carry a somewhat heavy bag which can be awkward to walk and climb the many stairs to access certain temples ...
