the Liberty district is a district of Pentagon which, itself, is the central district of city of brussels.

This district has as its center the Place des Libertés. From it radiate roads with a name in connection with the fundamental freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution such as the rue du Culte (article 19 on freedom of worship), the rue de l'Enseignement (article 24.1 and 24.3 on freedom and the right to school education), rue de la Presse (article 25 on freedom of the press), rue de Association (article 26 on freedom of assembly). - 1 Column of Congress and Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Rue Royale (bus 9293, “Congrès” stop)
free. – This column, high 47 meters away and containing a helical interior staircase of 193 steps, was erected between 1850 and 1859 according to the plans of the architect Joseph Poelaert. It commemorates the National Congress of 1830-31, that is to say the first legislative assembly of Belgium, in particular responsible for drawing up the Constitution. Since November 11, 1922, the tomb and the eternal flame of the Unknown Soldier have been installed at its foot in memory of the Belgian soldiers who died during the First World War. After the Second World War, a second slab was laid in front of the first and, finally, a third in 1998 bearing the inscription « To the Belgians who have since fallen to the Peace Service 1945 ». The column is surmounted by a gilded bronze statue of 4,70 meters high representing the first king of the Belgians, Leopold Ier. At each of the four corners, a female allegory each representing one of the Fundamental liberties (the Freedom of worship, the Freedom of association, the Freedom of education and the Freedom of press). Every July 21 (the national holiday) and every November 11 (the armistice of 1918), there is a remembrance ceremony in the presence of the sovereign and the constituted bodies. - 2 Liberty Square (bus 9293, stop "Congrès" or "Madou") – Traced in 1887 at the same time as the five streets which lead to it or run alongside it, this charming little tree-lined square is very popular with local workers who invade the many terraces during their lunch break or just after their work as soon as the outside temperature is some. not very lenient. - 3 Place des Barricades (subways 26, "Madou" station) – Between 1754 and 1841, this sandy place hosted the horse market transferred from the Place du Grand Sablon and was called Place d'Orange until 1831. It is the architect Joseph Poelaert which urbanized, in 1849, the place as it still is today by bringing to it a rare concept for the time, that of a place conceived on a circular model, measuring sixty meters in diameter and divided like a clock. The houses bordering it are neoclassical in style, very simple and covered with a white plaster. In the center, the bronze statue, inaugurated in 1847, ofAndré Vesalius who is considered by many historians of science to be the greatest anatomist of the Renaissance. Vesalius, shown standing, holds in his left hand his Treatise on the structure of the human body. For the little story, Victor Hugo rented, between 1866 and 1871, the no 4 room for his family. He himself resided there several times and frequently received Charles Baudelaire. It is also in this house that the three children of his son Charles were born and his wife died, Adele Foucher, in 1868.
