The Chic-Chocs wildlife reserve is a wildlife reserve of Quebec at Canada. It offers a magnificent mountain scenery to lovers of the outdoors and wide open spaces!

Understand

The Chic-Chocs wildlife reserve is located on the Gaspé Peninsula in the east of Quebec. It covers an area of 1 134 km2 and is adjacent to Gaspésie National Park West. Moreover, part of the national park is even enclosed within the reserve and vice versa. It is part of the network of wildlife reserves in Quebec managed by the Société des establishments de plein air du Québec (SÉPAQ).

The territory of the Chic-Chos wildlife reserve is mainly covered with black spruce balsam trees. It also includes fir and white birch forests in the Northeast as well as tundra on the highest peaks including the bare peaks of the Blanche-Lamontagne mountains (940 m), Vallières-de-Saint-Réal (940 m), Hog's Back (830 m) and Brown (920 m). Its fauna includes caribou, moose and black bear as well as several species of songbirds in addition to the ruffed grouse. It includes 43 lakes and many rivers. Its aquatic fauna includes brook trout and lake trout.

The administrative office of the wildlife reserve is located at Mont-Saint-Pierre north of the reserve on the shores of the St. Lawrence River. It serves as a reception station for the reserve. It offers information, registration and reservation services for the reserve.

To go

To get to the Chic-Chocs wildlife reserve from the urban centers of Quebec such as Montreal Where Quebec, you have to go to Sainte-Anne-des-Monts or to Mont-Saint-Pierre by taking Highway 20 and Route 132 east. The reserve is accessible from there by taking route 299 south. Route 299 also provides access to the reserve from the south from New Richmond. It is also accessible from the east by taking route 198 from L'Anse-Pleureuse on the shore of the Saint-Laurent river (east of Mont-Saint-Pierre) or from Murdochville.

Circulate

Route 299 crosses the east of the reserve from north to south and route 198 runs along the eastern border of the reserve. Forest roads run through the reserve giving access to each of the sectors. A card is available online or at the reception desk.

  • Sliding Accessible via route 299 Logo indicating timetables December to the end of April. – The Chic-Chocs wildlife reserve includes two ski areas for telemark, snowboarding and cross-country skiing: Mount Hog's Back and Champ-de-Mars. Access to these sites requires an approach walk ranging from 0.5 h To h. The sliding sports on these two mountains are managed by the Gaspésie National Park

Chalets

The Chic-Chocs wildlife reserve includes a total of 15 cabins for rent divided into six accommodation sectors. They are located near a lake which has a floating dock. The reservation of a chalet in the resort includes a rowboat, a kayak and a barbecue. The chalets are open year round. Small game or bear fishing or hunting packages including cabin accommodation are offered. In addition, a promotion is offered to have seven consecutive nights at the resort for the price of five. The reservation of a cottage in resort format includes a day of fishing if the reservation is made during the fishing season. All chalets include a bathroom with shower and toilet. They all have access to propane with the exception of the Mine-Madeleine chalet.

  • Lake Adam chalet  – An isolated chalet located on the edge of a plan offering a magnificent view of Mont Jacques-Cartier and being able to accommodate four to six people (the fifth and sixth people in bunk beds), powered by solar energy. It has a wood stove.
  • Lac Madeleine chalets  – Three chalets located on the edge of a lake in an intimate setting, electric access powered by solar energy, which can accommodate a total of 16 people (a four-person chalet, a ten-person chalet and a four to six-person chalet with the fifth and sixth people in bunk beds).
  • Lac Mont-Louis cabins  – Five cabins located on the shores of Lake Mont-Louis and easily accessible from the municipality of Mont-Louis, accommodating a total of 22 people (three four-person chalets, one four-to-six-person chalet with the fifth and sixth person in bunk beds and a two-to-four-person chalet with the third and fourth person in bunk beds) . They have a wood stove.
  • Lac Sainte-Anne cabins  – Four cabins located on the shores of beautiful Lake Sainte-Anne, one is perfect for one or two people while the others can accommodate four people (one of them accommodates the third and fourth people in bunk beds), they are located less than of 5 km from route 299.
  • Lake Branche-Nord chalet  – A chalet that can accommodate four to six people with the fifth and sixth people in bunk beds.
  • Mine-Madeleine chalets  – A chalet located in the isolated northern sector of the reserve in 12 km from the Gîte du Mont-Albert, mainly used for hunters who want to hunt in zone 10, but in winter it is an excellent one for Nordic skiing and telemark enthusiasts. It has access to electricity and has a wood stove.
