Rotterdam - Róterdam

Rotterdam (Rotterdam in Dutch) is the largest city in the province of South holland and the second largest of Netherlands. The city is the second largest in the country with a population of approximately 650,000 inhabitants in the municipality (2020) and some 2.2 million inhabitants in the shared metropolitan area of The Hague and Rotterdam MRDH. Rotterdam is a vibrant and multicultural city; It is known for its university (Erasmus), avant-garde architecture, lively cultural life, riverside industrial setting, maritime heritage, and colorful summer events. The municipality extends to the North Sea with giant areas such as Europoort Y Maasvlakte 1 and 2 . They all belong to thePort of rotterdam .

Starting from a dam built in 1270 on the River Rotte, Rotterdam has grown into a major international commercial center. The Port of Rotterdam is the busiest port in Europe by cargo tonnage, and was the busiest in the world from 1962 until it was overtaken by Shanghai in 2004. Rotterdam's commercial and strategic importance is based on its location near the mouth of the Nieuwe Maas (New Meuse), a channel in the delta formed by the Rhine and the Meuse in the North Sea. These rivers lead directly to central Europe, including the industrial Ruhr region, which is why Rotterdam is often called the "Gateway to Europe".

The bombing of Rotterdam on May 14, 1940 by Nazi Germany forced the Dutch army to capitulate. Downtown Rotterdam was almost completely destroyed by the Luftwaffe, with 900 civilians killed and 80,000 homeless. Rotterdam was gradually rebuilt from the 1950s to the 1990s. Since then, many relatively tall buildings (by Dutch standards) have emerged throughout the city center and its surroundings. Bold new styles of apartments, office buildings and recreational facilities made Rotterdam a city of modern architecture and the only city in the Netherlands with a modern skyline. Because of this, the city is especially interesting for the Dutch to visit.

Understand

Rotterdam has been, until 2001, the largest port in the world. In fact, the visitor will be surprised to learn that the city is almost 30 kilometers from the coast. In those thirty kilometers, around the canal that connects the city with the sea, the Nieuwe Waterweg, there are hundreds and hundreds of docks, port facilities and oil terminals. This port origin has definitely determined the life of the city, which stands out for its multicultural population and its strict and hard-working character. Unlike the rest of the Dutch cities, which stand out for their historic centers full of canals and centuries-old buildings, the center of Rotterdam is full of modern buildings and avant-garde architecture. This, unfortunately, was not by the will of the Rotterdamese; On May 10, 1940, during the Battle of the Netherlands, the historic center of Rotterdam was bombed by the Luftwaffe and, except for a few buildings, the city center was completely razed. This may make it less attractive in the eyes of those looking for something "typically Dutch", it is a feast for the eyes of those looking for the most avant-garde architecture, and, paradoxically, it offers a more realistic view of what the real Holland is. than other more traditional cities, and, consequently, more touristy.

History

The settlement at the lower end of the stream of fen Rotte It dates back to at least 900. Around 1150, major flooding in the area ended development, leading to the construction of levees and protection dams. A dam at Rotte or 'Rotterdam' was built in the 1260s and was in the present Hoogstraat ('High Street').

Although Rotterdam did well after the Middle Ages and in the 'Golden Age' (roughly between 1650 and 1750), it was not before the latter part of the 19th century that the city began to develop rapidly. With the help of the excavation of a new sea lane (Nieuwe Waterweg), Rotterdam got rid of access problems caused by river sedimentation and began to receive larger and larger ships with cargo to / from the Ruhrgebiet boom in Germany. Trade and industry related to the port exploded, and the city began to attract many migrants from the then poor province of Brabant, for whom the southern part of the city was built. At the beginning of the 20th century, Rotterdam was on its way to becoming the largest economic center in the Netherlands. Rotterdam was almost completely devastated by Nazi bombing during World War II. The German army invaded the Netherlands on May 10. 1940. Germany had planned to conquer the country in one day, but after meeting unexpectedly fierce resistance, it finally forced the Dutch army to capitulate on May 14, 1940 by bombing Rotterdam and threatening to bomb other cities. . The heart of the city was almost completely destroyed by the German Luftwaffe, and 800 people died, while another 80,000 were left homeless. During the war, Rotterdam was bombed several times during Allied raids targeting the port area, but sometimes they also hit the city. The City Council survived the bombing. However, unlike most other European cities, the City Council did not intend to rebuild what was lost, but to seize the opportunity to create a "new" and better city. Damaged but not destroyed old buildings were demolished in the process.

From the 1950s to the 1970s, the city was rebuilt. It remained quite windy and open until city councils starting in the 1980s began to develop an active architectural policy. Bold new styles of apartments, office buildings, and recreational facilities resulted in a more "livable" downtown area with a new skyline. In the 1990s, the Kop van Zuid it was built on the south bank of the river as a new business center.

Demography

In the Netherlands, Rotterdam has the highest percentage of foreigners from non-industrialized countries. Almost 50% of the population is not native to the Netherlands or has at least one parent born outside the country. Muslims comprise about 25% of the city's population. The city is also home to one of the largest Cape Verdean communities in the world, as well as the largest Dutch Antillean community.

Atmosphere

The culture of Rotterdam is different from that of other cities in the Netherlands. People's mentality is described as 'I can do it'. From the bartenders you meet to entrepreneurs and recent immigrants, everyone has a dream of moving on with life. The modern design of the city, the hustle and bustle and the spree of buildings add to this impression. That said, people can sometimes be too honest with you. And yes, the city is not the most welcoming or the most picturesque of cities, especially on winter days. But get acquainted with this small metropolis, the easiest thing is to do it on one of the holidays with good weather. You will come to love it.

Winters in Rotterdam are wet and can be very cold, but just as beautiful

Weather

You can also find that visiting this city in spring or summer is more pleasant than in winter, as Holland can be a rainy place and Rotterdam is a city that gains a lot of charm especially when the sun is shining.

To get

By plane

The Rotterdam airport that it's called Rotterdam The Hague Airport ([3]) is a small airport used mostly for regional flights. However, with the rise of low-cost companies, their traffic begins to increase. From Spain, Transavia ([4]), the low-cost subsidiary of KLM, flies to Rotterdam from Girona, Alicante, Malaga, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Madrid. There are also flights to London and other cities in Europe. The great advantage of Rotterdam airport is its proximity to the city center (no more than 5 kilometers). To get to Rotterdam from the airport, take bus number 33 to go to Centraal Station or, if you are driving, follow the signs "Centrum".

For most international travelers, the gateway to Rotterdam (and the entire country) is the international airport of Schiphol (AMS), almost 70 kilometers from Rotterdam. Numerous companies, including most of the low-cost ones, will land you at Schiphol.

Ryanair ([5]), however, it uses the airport Eindhoven (EIN), 120 kilometers from Rotterdam.

Boat

Getting to Rotterdam by boat is the option that best suits the history of the second Dutch city. For those who have enough money, the most historic and charming option is to arrive on a cruise from the Holland-America Line ([6]) or any other cruise company that stops or ends in Rotterdam. For those more budget conscious, it can be reached by boat from the UK (Harwich) via Stena line ([7]). They disembark in Hoek van Holland, a coastal town that, despite belonging to the municipality of Rotterdam, is almost 30 kilometers from its urban center. To get to the city center from Hoek van Holland, there is a train station right next to the pier (Hoek van Holland Haven) from where trains leave every half hour to Rotterdam Centraal.

By train

Rotterdam is one of the main hubs in the Dutch railway network. Rotterdam Central Station (Rotterdam Centraal, or Centraal Station) is the symbolic center of the city. As of today (December 2010) the station and its surroundings are undergoing a long and profound remodeling process that will end the current station (a functionalist building built during the 1950s) to replace it with a new transport interchange that to accommodate the intense increase in traffic, a new metro station and the new high-speed line that will link the city with Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris. Despite the fact that the Dutch railway network is operated by several companies, all trains passing through Rotterdam are operated by the former railway monopoly, Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) ([8]).

The Dutch railways are comfortable and punctual, but they don't come cheap. Tickets are purchased at machines (only Dutch coins and debit cards or Maestro; no credit cards or Visa Electron) or in box office (Tickets purchased at the box office have a surcharge of € 0.50). Trains have 2nd and 1st class; 1st class does not differ much in comfort, but is less crowded; Unless it is rush hour and you have the urgent need to be seated, it is not worth it. As it is not worth sneaking: forever there is a reviewer and the fines are significant; if you don't have money, your documentation can be withheld or even arrested. Finally, discount tickets ("korting") can only be purchased if you have a discount card (voordeelurenabonnement) that costs 55 euros. This card is generally not worth it to the casual tourist.

To arrive from Amsterdam there is an Intercity every half hour that departs from Amsterdam Centraal, stopping at Schiphol, Leiden and The Hague airports. This is the train that must take those who disembark at the airport of Schiphol. The journey time is 45 min. from Schiphol and 60 min. from Amsterdam. 2nd class single ticket costs € 10.20 from Schiphol, € 12.80 from Amsterdam.

To arrive from Eindhoven there is an Intercity every half hour that departs from Eindhoven train station, stopping in Tilburg, Breda and Dordrecht. (To get to the train station from the airport, take the bus 401 operated by the company Hermes) The duration of the journey (by train) is 1 hour and 10 minutes. 2nd class single ticket costs € 15.40.

Ryanair flights from Eindhoven usually leave very early in the morning; At this time, neither the trains nor the buses are operational. Please take this into account before planning your departure. The last train from Rotterdam to Eindhoven leaves at 23:30.

To arrive from Brussels there is, every hour, an international train operated jointly by the Belgian and Dutch railways (the Belgians put the locomotive and the driver, the Dutch put the wagons and inspectors) stopping in Mechelen, Antwerp, Roosendaal and Dordrecht. The journey time is two hours and the 2nd class single ticket costs 24 euros.

To get from the United Kingdom there are combined tickets train boat train called Dutchflyer departing from London (Liverpool Street) or Cambridge via Harwich and Hoek van Holland. More information in [9]

The train high speed Thalys ([10]) runs from Paris (Nord) and Brussels to Amsterdam, stopping at Rotterdam Centraal. Although it is much more comfortable, it is also more expensive and, until the work on the high-speed line (HSL), scheduled for this year, is completed, the speed is not much higher either.

Finally, to get from Spain the best option is to go via Paris. Trains from Spain stop at Montparnasse (TGV) or Austerlitz (Trenhotel), while trains bound for the Netherlands invariably depart from Gare du Nord.

NOTE: The new Amsterdam - Brussels High Speed Line will be completed during the 2007-2008 period. Its termination may lead to changes in rail services. Also consider that works in progress may modify or alter the operation of existing services.

By bus

The rise of low cost has made the airplane a much cheaper option than the bus. Furthermore, in order to reduce congestion on the already crowded Dutch motorways, there are practically no long-distance bus lines in the Netherlands, except in very rural areas. Thus, for example, there is no direct bus line between Amsterdam and Rotterdam, nor between Rotterdam and the main cities of the Netherlands. Still, if you prefer to travel by bus, Eurolines ([11]) is the only company that offers services between Spain and the Netherlands.

By car

The road network in the Netherlands is very well maintained and well signposted (motorway junctions have names, and there are test points on almost all roads), thanks to the efforts of the Automobile Club (ANWB), which also has offices in the main cities of the country. (In Rotterdam, at Binnenwegplein 20). The ANWB's endeavor has also made Dutch motorways toll free, except for two tunnels and a bridge under concession. On the other hand, gasoline is expensive (between € 1.45 and € 1.55 per liter for Eurosuper) and traffic is proverbially congested.

There are several ways to get to Rotterdam by motorway:

From Amsterdam, Schiphol and the north of the country, through the A4 (Amsterdam - The Hague) and the A13 (The Hague - Rotterdam). The A13 ends at the Kleinpolder knoppunt; go straight on on Stadhoudersweg and Schiekade.

From Belgium and the south of the country, through the A16 (Belgian border - Rotterdam), part of the E-19 (Paris - Amsterdam). Take exit 25 (Centrum) and follow direction Centrum at the roundabout, following the Abram van Rijckeworseweg and the Maasboulevard until Boompjes.

However, none of these options (which involve looking for expensive parking in the center) is recommended (see "Drive by car" below). The best option is still to go to any of the Park Rides (follow the P R signs), park there and move by public transport.

Travel

The Dutch public transport system is nationally coordinated in order to achieve an efficient and universal service, avoiding collapses and redundancies. This system is complemented by a unified fare system, which allows the same ticket to be used in various means of transport throughout the country.

There is a website, 9292ov.nl ([12]), which has a tool (OV-planner) that allows you to calculate any route by public transport between any two points in the Netherlands. Unfortunately, it is only in Dutch, but for the intrepid tourist with a dictionary it becomes the ultimate tool for planning any trip to the Netherlands.

Cycling

The Dutch means of transport par excellence, the bicycle (fiets in Dutch) is the best way to get around Dutch cities. If you are going to stay for more than ten days, it may be worth buying a bicycle; They can be carried on the railway (outside rush hours and buying a special ticket) with what they can be ideal travel companions. The downside is that you need to store your bike somewhere at night, and a good lock (or two); there is a real system for buying and selling stolen bicycles, managed (that is to say) mostly by drug addicts. Buying a bike from a junkie definitely do not It's a good idea: buyers of stolen bikes can be equally punished and even spend a night in the dungeon. Dutch bicycles are normally simple models and, contrary to what we are taught as children, pedaling backwards serves to brake them. Some bicycles, designed for foreigners, also give us handlebar brakes of a lifetime.

To rent a bike in Rotterdam, Rotterdam Bycycle (at the USE-IT Office, Schaatsbaan 41-45, tel. 31-10-240-9158, [13]) it's a good option. Not only do they rent bicycles (6 euros a day, 5 euros each day extra) but they also organize bike rides around the city.

To buy a bike legally, the shop under the Centraal Station (you have to go outside) is one of the most popular. Always second hand; new bicycles have extortionate prices (€ 600 or more) and even the Dutch only buy them when buying a house or in some special event.

The city, as is logical and usual in Holland, is perfectly adapted for bicycle traffic. Most of the streets allow the circulation of bicycles in both directions; the "uitgezonderd fiets" plaque (except bicycles) under many traffic signs allows the cyclist to travel practically without limits in the city. Where cyclists cannot go on the road, there are perfectly signposted bike lanes that are integrated into the national network of cycle paths. Attention: mopeds can go on bike lanes; just turn to the right and keep pedaling.

By metro, bus and tram

Public transport in Rotterdam is managed by the Rotterdamsche Elektrische Tram (RET) ([14]), which operates the metro, tram and bus networks.

The center of Rotterdam is very compact and most of the attractions can be reached on foot. In any case, for the tourist who prefers to spend his energy on other things than walking, the public transport network will be more than satisfactory.

The meter (the first to be built in the Netherlands, inaugurated in 1966) is built with the fundamental purpose of linking the peripheral districts with the city center. Its two lines (the red Calandlijn and the blue Erasmuslijn) intersect at the station. Beurs and its interest for the tourist is how much less limited. In 2010 they finished an extension of the blue line from Centraal Station to Melanchtonweg, passing through the Blijdorp zoo, connecting Rotterdam, through an old railway branch, with The Hague; It is called RandstadRail.

The busesLikewise, they have little interest for the tourist; practically non-existent in the city center, they are used mainly in the periphery to connect the most remote neighborhoods with the metro stations. Only the 33, which links Centraal Station to the airport, deserves our attention.

The tramsThese, yes, are useful for tourists, linking Centraal Station with most points of interest; Except for line 2 (which runs a transversal route through the south of the city), all trams stop at the Central Station. Line 7 ends at Willemsplein, from where catamarans leave for Dordrecht; lines 20, 23 and 25 cross the Erasmus bridge; line 8 leads to the Euromast.

By train

By subway

Lines A (green), B (yellow) and C (red) share tracks between Schiedam Centrum Y Capelsebrug and they offer an east-west connection.

Lines D (light blue) and E (blue) share tracks between Rotterdam Centraal Y Slinge and they offer a north-south connection. Interchange between all lines is possible at the station Beurs In the city center.

Lines A, B and C operate every 10 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays, allowing 3-4 minute intervals on the main section between Schiedam Centrum Y Capelsebrug . Lines D and E operate every 10 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays, giving shorter intervals between Rotterdam Centraal Y Slinge . In the evening, on Saturday morning and Sunday, the service is reduced to a 15-minute interval.

The Rotterdam metro runs from 05:30 to midnight. In 2019, there is a pilot on Friday and Saturday nights with the service extended for one hour.

For tourists the most important metro stations are:

By tram

There are 9 tram lines in the city. Each tram has a driver. The tram stops provide a detailed map of the public transport system. Most lines operate every 10 minutes on weekdays with more frequent service during peak hours on some lines.

All trams, except number 2, will stop at Rotterdam Centraal .

  • Line 2 It is the only one that remains entirely on the south bank of the river, crossing the districts furthest from it, so it is of little use to tourists.
  • Lines 20, 23 and 25 pass through the Erasmus bridge until Kop van Zuid and then on the south side.
  • lines 21 and 24 they go to Schiedam
  • line 4 goes from the suburbs in the northeast through Station Noord Y Rotterdam Centraal until Marconiplein
  • Line 7 has a picturesque terminal at the foot of the Erasmus bridge, then follow Werstersingel to Rotterdam Centraal , and then further east to Kralingen , where you can get off at Kralingse Plas (the lake with leisure activities) and the Excelsior stadium.
  • Line 8 is perhaps the most useful for tourists, since it ranges from Rotterdam Centraal to south through Westersingel, Coolsingel, Schiedamsedijk and then west, stopping at Euromast and Delftshaven, ending at Sparta Stadium.
  • Line 12 is a special line that goes between Rotteraam Centraal Y Feijenoord Stadion when there is a party there.

Boat

The port character of the city allows that there are still public transport services by boat. The company Waterbus ([15]) has fast catamaran services between Rotterdam and some surrounding towns (see "The Surroundings" below). The company Watertaxi Rotterdam ([16], tel. 10-31-403-0303) offers taxi services between some thirty piers scattered between the two banks of the Meuse, as well as various ferry services. None of these services is part of the Unified Rate System.

By car

It is not possible to pay cash for parking meters on the street. You can pay with: - debit card - 06-parking - parking tickets - credit card (in some machines)

Cycling

Like any city in the Netherlands, Rotterdam is very very bike friendly. Getting around by bike is probably the fastest way to travel within the city. There are separate bike lanes on most major streets and separate traffic lights for cyclists. Avoid placing your tire on the tram rails - always cross the tram rails at an angle. Of course, it is also highly recommended to be aware of other traffic at all times. On the other hand, cyclists can rely on the fact that motorists and pedestrians know about bicycles.

Always lock your bike securely when leaving it (preferably chained to a fixed object) or going to a guarded bike parking station.

Rent a bike

In Rotterdam Centraal, you can rent bicycles from the shop in the underground bike park, below the station square. Exit the station at the front, exit 'Stationsplein'. The entrance to the bicycle parking ('fietsenstalling', with the glass roof) is on your right, opposite the large café Engels. Use-it, rent nice Kronan bikes (Schaatsbaan 41-45, exit the central station towards the center. Turn right at Engels restaurant and take the second right).

Several other private companies can rent bicycles. Holland-Cycling.com provides a list of addresses. You will find another list at Rotterdam.nl. Rotterdam also joins oBike, a new type of shared bike system (see also the city's tourist information).

If you have a personal OV-chipkaart (rather than an anonymous one), bikes can be rented at many train and metro stations and other central locations using the OV-fiets system.

Guarded bicycle parking stations

  • Many intercity train stations have their own bicycle parking station. Many times the service is not free.
  • The municipality of Rotterdam also has a few locations.

Watch

  • Kunsthal: Museum that organizes temporary exhibitions of great importance. Architect is Rem Koolhaas / OMA.
  • Maritiem Museum: Maritime Museum, with exhibitions such as the port of Rotterdam

Surprisingly, the City Hall survived the bombing and is one of the few truly historic buildings in the city. It is nice to enter the monumental main hall and see the statues. The courtyard is also worth a visit. Since the City Hall is still in use, you can enter the public areas and take a look. The other rooms will be banned, unless you can persuade one of the guards to open the Burgerzaal masterpiece for you. The City Hall also has a bell tower with a carillon that is played often, while the roof of the central tower is made of gold. Edit

Very well decorated Italian restaurant where you don't go for a simple pizza. In fact, they don't even serve pizza. With the good use of herbs, garlic and other more interesting things that Italian cuisine has to offer, it is almost impossible not to like this food. The staff is professional and for what you get, the prices really aren't that bad. In summer you can eat outside (there is a small terrace at the back). A nice feature of this restaurant is that the kitchen is open until 23:00, something that is not very common in Rotterdam. Three-course meal: € 35.00, table wine: € 2.60 per glass. Edit

Drink and go out

The nightlife in Rotterdam is extremely varied, each subculture has its own area in the city. The Oude Haven (near Kubuswoningen ) and the main market square Blaak they are the hangout for business, economics and law students. The cafes and restaurants of Oude Haven (Old Port) are around a small picturesque port. Landscape of water, city lights, boats and Het Witte Huis , the first skyscraper in Europe (1897). The atmosphere is really great and it is best to go when the sun goes down, very romantic! Great place for a night out.

Near the Oude Haven area, the streets around Pannenkoekstraat they have emerged as a new center for shopping and going out. Amid small boutiques selling clothing and interior design from young and emerging designers, you can find cocktail bars like Level or Soho, which draw huge crowds. Especially in the summer, this is a great place to have a mojito.

The liveliest bar area in the city is Eendrachtsplein / Nieuwe Binnenweg . Alternative, quiet and full of friendly and open-minded people. The cafes to look for are Stalles, Parket, and Rotown. This is the ideal place for the most creative people, musicians, designers and students of art schools. Walk along de Nieuwe Binnenweg and arrive at Café Ari ( Nieuwe Binnenweg / Mathenesserlaan ) and Westerpaviljoen (great cafe with the best terrace in town). This is a good place to start the night. Walk a little (3 minutes) through Binnenweg again and turn left at ' s-Gravendijkwal(You will see the striking neon lights of the sexclub OQ). Across the street you will find Jazz Cafe Dizzy. A great place for some quality beer and live jazz music. You can also eat in almost all the places mentioned.

Now walk back by Binnenweg to the east. Crossing Eendrachtsplein Y turn right towards Westersingel . Walk 3 minutes and on your left is Witte de Withstraat . Some nice cafes like De Witte Aap, Mondriaan, Bar P, and De Schouw are found here, along with some good restaurants as well. This is also the most artistic street in Rotterdam. Here you will find Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art, MAMA, media showroom and art in motion and many more. Drink in style!

If you like loud music, your best option would be to go to De Baroeg on the "Spinozaweg" in Rotterdam-Lombardijen. Lots of heavy metal acts perform here every year. If you don't feel like going all the way to the suburbs, you can also try your luck at the Rhythm at Oude Binnenweg . A popular spot with alternative guys.

The club scene in Rotterdam is well known. For example, it spawned the chat room scene in the early 1990s and was home to Now & Wow, one of the trendiest clubs in the world. The Now & Wow no longer exists, but in its last location, an old grain silo near the metro station Maashaven , there are still numerous dance parties. As with the bar scene, there are clubs that cater to different groups of people. In addition, the nightlife of Rotterdam is very dynamic: places come and go, move, change owners, etc. It mainly focuses on:

  • Kruiskade : Clubs like Off Corso (housed in a former cinema) and Thalia Lounge have good parties on the weekends and attract mostly twentysomethings.
  • Stadhuisplein : number of bars and clubs most aimed at the working class. The nearby Baja Beach Club (on Schouwburgplein) draws a similar crowd. Stadhuisplein is best avoided on weekends due to the large amount of aggression. During the weekdays, most of the students go out, with De Après Skihut full of people every day of the week.
  • Delftsestraat : Hollywood is a great nightclub that fills up quickly on weekends with a somewhat younger crowd. The Apres Ski Hut recreates the Tyrolean atmosphere on the same colorless street.
  • Club Fri Close to the old port area, it is a more elegant and modern club, which also offers nice views over the Maas river.

Some listings that can be found around these places:

  • Stalles , Nieuwe Binnenweg 11a. A little bar next to Parket. They serve a wide variety of single malt whiskeys. It is quite small, but very cozy. Edit
  • Grand cafe Westerpaviljoen , Nieuwe Binnenweg 136. Open until 02:00 on weekends. Rotterdam residents like to read their newspaper here. For a solid breakfast (Dutch "wentelteefjes"), a good lunch or a quick meeting Westerpaviljoen is a perfect place. Hang out on their huge and fantastic terrace, drink a good glass of Amstel or Hoegaarden White beer. Edit
  • Le Vagabond , Nieuwe Binnenweg 99, [10 4365293]. The oldest, but best, bar on Binnenweg. It attracts a mixed crowd of musicians, journalists, students, and travelers. The atmosphere is very relaxed during the afternoon, but at night various activities are organized. On Thursdays and Saturdays there are DJs who host HipHop and Britpop parties that are definitely worth a visit if you want to have fun. Every Sunday there is live music by a wide variety of bands. Edit
  • Café De Witte Aap , Witte de Withstraat 78 (Metro: Eendrachtsplein). This classic Rotterdam pub (The White Monkey) draws a very diverse crowd and is often too large for its premises. It's a great place to have a pre-dinner drink or before exploring the rest of this lively neighborhood. Edit
  • Unie Cafe (Metro: Eendrachtsplein). This restaurant / café / art society is a Rotterdam institute. Housed in a magnificent building reminiscent of a Mondriaan painting, it also hosts all kinds of cultural venues and festivals. A good place for coffee too. Edit
  • Pol Bar , Meent 46-48. On weekends open until 02:00. Nice bar with modern solid patio. The crowd can be a bit classy at times, but don't let that scare you too much away. Right next to the market (Tuesday and Thursday), and they won some prizes with their sandwiches. Edit
  • Paddy murphy's This Irish pub is truly Irish. Green and wood colors and a bar team that only speaks English. Live music every night! On Monday there is pub bingo. On weekends the ticket price is € 2.50. (updated Mar 2017 | edit)
  • Dynamo .Muzikantencentrum Dynamo is a venue that rents rehearsal rooms and a studio for musicians. It also has a bar that works until the bar staff decides to do so. It's a bit off the beaten path and is one of Rotterdam's secrets (more than 95% of the locals don't even know about it!). Their location won't be revealed here, but if you're lucky, you might find someone. who can take you there. Edit
  • From Pui , Oostzeedijk Beneden 221 (Metro: Oostplein). Very good bar in a corner building in the heart of Kralingen. Recognizable by the distinguished red awnings. There are students there, but it is not a student pub. There are musicians there, but it is not a cafe for musicians. There are businessmen there, but that doesn't make it a business cafe. It's the mix of people and taste that makes it so enjoyable. Edit
  • From Tiki , Hartmansstraat 16 / A (between Witte de Withstraat and Westblaak). Don't let the cheesy Hawaiian interior put you off. Frequented by an alternative arts crowd, with rockabilly and ska (and occasionally Ethiopian jazz) on the speakers. Cocktails and dinner menu. Edit

Coffeeshops

As everywhere in the Netherlands, the possession (of small amounts) and use of cannabis (hashish and marijuana) is tolerated in Rotterdam. Since Amsterdam attracts more cafes, tourism prices are lower in Rotterdam. Some renowned places:

  • Coffeeshop "De lachende paus" ("The Laughing Pope", Nieuwe Binnenweg): a shop where you can buy more than 40 types of joints pre-laminated ( voorgedraaide in Dutch). Prices can be high, but it's worth a visit.
  • Coffeeshop "Pluto" (Nieuwe Binnenweg 139a): actually a head shop. They also sell a lot of paraphernalia like pipes and bongs.
  • "Greenhouse" cafeteria (Nieuwe Binnenweg) Ditto.
  • Cafe "The Reefer" (De Meent, city center)
  • Coffeeshop "The Pool" (Westersingel, 5 m from Central Station): a pleasant Coffeeshop on the first floor where you can sit and relax at a table or in a bar. Or play pool on the second and third floors.
  • Coffeeshop the "Act" / Cafe "De Nieuwe Wet" (Westerwagenstraat): Since the mid-1990s, the sale of alcohol and cannabis in the same place has become illegal. The natural solution? Divide your cafe and pub into two separate entities, with a single door.
  • Coffeeshop "Nemo" (Nieuwe Binnenweg): Unlike many coffeeshops, this place is bright, open and airy, with large windows and comfortable seating; the walls are covered in a Nimo-style (Disney) montage and the music is more relaxed than many coffeeshops. A good place for someone who wants something milder than many other coffeeshops.

Possessing large amounts of hasheesh or cannabis is a crime in the Netherlands: do not take things with you when you leave the Netherlands (you can be severely punished in neighboring countries). Nor is it wise to buy for someone else, especially if you are a foreigner, since you can be punished in your home country (it has happened).

Smoking tobacco is prohibited inside food and drink establishments, even in coffeeshops! But it seems that tobacco smoking is tolerated in coffee shops, and their pre-rolled joints are often mixed with tobacco.

Music venues

  • Rotown, where small national and international independent artists perform.
  • WORM, a place focused on underground and avant-garde music
  • Roodkapje, a gallery that also hosts various parties
  • Poortgebouw, a place run by squatters who live in the building.

Keep in touch

The country telephone code for the Netherlands is 31 and the city code for Rotterdam is 010. In case of emergency , I dialed 1-1-2 (no fee). When you stay longer, buy a prepaid SIM card for your mobile phone.

Security

You should take the usual precautions against pickpocketing and luggage theft, especially on main shopping streets, in markets, on trams and trains, in stations, and anywhere tourists congregate. It is not advisable to walk down the Stadhuisplein when the nightlife ends. Fights often occur in this area after midnight. Rotterdam also has a reputation for massive venues getting out of hand, although you shouldn't worry too much about that. If violence breaks out at football festivities (not that unlikely) or at the end of sun-drenched holidays, such as Queensday (even less unlikely, especially on Stadhuisplein), just walk away and you are unlikely to be affected . It is advisable not to wear an Ajax Amsterdam soccer jersey or any other garment that promotes Ajax or Amsterdam. In terms of general security, most areas of the city are safe during the day.

When you drive a car with foreign registration (especially if it is French or Belgian), it is possible that the so-called drug dealers approach you . This can happen on the highways surrounding the city and in the city itself. These guys try to lure people to places where drugs are trafficked. Don't respond to their signals and don't follow them.

Health

Surroundings

If you don't have a car, the hub for getting out of town will probably be Rotterdam Centraal , from where trains depart in all directions at short intervals (you can usually pass by and catch the next train to your destination). Most regional and longer distance buses also depart from here, with the exception of most buses to southern destinations and the province of Zeeland which depart from the Zuidplein subway station . Unlike trains, bus departure times need to be checked in advance as they can be distant from each other.

For trains to the north and south, travelers can also choose to depart from Rotterdam Blaak .

You can also reach Hague easy and quite fast with the E subway line.

Nearby destinations like Schiedam or even Delft can also be reached by bike if you fancy a slightly longer journey. Bicycle routes and directions are well signposted and available in abundance. A good idea for a sunny day! Schiedam can also be reached by train or underground (in 15 minutes). MRDH is the area of the Rotterdam-Schiedam-Delft-The Hague region; see this page for more information on travel and cycling.
