Ratingen is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia.

background

Since the Middle Ages, the Ratingen area has belonged to the Counts, and later Dukes, of Berg. For them, the settlement played an important role in the fight against the Archbishop of Cologne. Because of its advantageous strategic location, Ratingen was granted city rights by Count Adolf V. von Berg in 1276 in order to create a counterweight against the archbishopric and its claims to power and to secure the northern Bergische area by making the old church and court place at a crossroads of important roads located, granted city privileges and had it fortified. In the further course of history, Ratingen experienced an economic boom as one of the four main towns in Berg. Ratingen's economic boom that had lasted for centuries ended in the 16th century: nearby Düsseldorf became a residence in 1511, and later a state fortress. The plague hit the city, new weapons made the city walls ineffective, and in 1641 it was completely destroyed during the Thirty Years War. During the industrialization the place recovered, but without attaining the former meaning. Today Ratingen is a popular place of residence for people who work in centers such as Düsseldorf and Cologne, but move here because of the lower rents and land prices. The scenic charm of the area and the good connection to the centers make the place very attractive.
