background
This is the only place on the west coast of the island. It is about 15 miles away from the San Andros airfield. Most of the residents are descendants of Seminole Indians who came from Florida in the 18th and 19th centuries. In this place it is especially appropriate to ask the residents for permission to take a picture.
Until 1968 the only way to get there was by sea, when a logging company cut a swath through the forest. But it wasn't until the 1980s that it became a paved road. Since then, building materials and food have been coming there regularly and the living conditions of the residents have improved significantly. Around 200 people now live there.
Some residents still do basketry today. This is an ancient tradition that cannot be found anywhere else in the Bahamas. It has been passed on to the younger generation for generations.
