The coastal lagoons of Santo André and Sancha, both located on the Alentejo coast, north of Sines, as well as the adjacent maritime strip - an area of sandy substrate 1.5 km wide and abundant in annelids and bivalves that serve as food. to various fish species - constitute a Nature Reserve created at the beginning of this century.
The main reason for its classification is linked to the need to protect wetlands, namely those that associate the presence of important faunal groups to the characteristics of these habitats. In the case of these lakes, the most prominent are the birds, of which more than a hundred species, mainly aquatic and passerine, are listed. As a curiosity, it should be added that the Sancha lagoon is home to a colony of red heron. To the animal variety, floristics are added, highlighting the presence of some endemisms.
The landscape's interest in the area is linked to the variety of situations, the presence close to the sea and the luminosity of this stretch of the Portuguese coast.
