Tourist Attractions

  • Battistero di Riva San Vitale. The oldest surviving Christian building in Switzerland. The baptistery was built in the 5th century. Its floor plan is square and, from a certain height, merges into an octagon. It is covered with a priepe roof. Under today's monolithic baptismal font from around 1200 is the original font with a depth of 60 cm. It could be reached via two descending steps and had a drain made of masonry bricks. The floor has been raised four times over the centuries and the original floor consists of black and white marble tiles. The apse received its present appearance in the 9th century and has already been rebuilt twice. Numerous frescoes can be seen in the chapel. While the Last Judgment is depicted in the left niche, the right niche depicts the birth of Christ in Byzantine painting style with Mary lying on a bed.
  • Santa Croce from Riva San Vitale. The church with its yellow and white paint is the parish's landmark that can be seen from afar. The important central building was built in the Renaissance style at the end of the 16th century. Inside there are wall paintings by the Pozzi brothers from 1592. The altarpieces by Camillo Procaccini are also worth seeing.
