Riverton is a city in the region Southland. North of the city, the Aparima River and the Pourakino River converge in the Jacobs River Estuary. This part of the estuary falls partially dry depending on the tide. After the road bridge of the SH 99, the river mouth merges into Taramea Bay and is then part of the Foveaux Strait.
