Riyadh is the capital ofSaudi Arabia. Located on the desert plateau of Nejd, it constitutes a particularly developed urban enclave with its buildings, highways and ultra-modern constructions. Densely populated, its population, which was 150,000 inhabitants at the start of the 1960s, it is now close to 6 million inhabitants.
Important stronghold under the Ottomans, Riyadh was taken by a small garrison headed by the young Ibn Séoud in 1902. Thirty years later, the latter founded Saudi Arabia and made the city his capital. An important economic hub, Riyadh relies on the presence of an ultra-modern business district, the King Abdullah Financial District.
Several emblematic monuments structure the urban landscape: the water tower, essential in such an arid climate, the Saudi television tower, which rises to 170 meters, the Al-Faisaliah Center or the very original Kingdom Center, top of 302 meters and which is the second tallest skyscraper in the country. Others, more discreet, have historical value, such as the fort Al-Masmak, built in 1865.
