Tourist Attractions

  • Medieval Romanesque-Gothic church with beautiful baroque paintings.

Everyone who enters the church is fascinated. You can see bright colors in the whole nave up to the barrel vault. Stories are told in pictures in the galleries. Tendrils garland the walls from floor to ceiling. There you can see a deep blue, star-studded sky. In its center is the golden sun framed by white-blue clouds and four angels. When you enter the church you can see the apostles Paul and Peter in the gallery and when you turn around the four evangelists Luke, Mark, Matthew and John. The story of creation and the slaughter of Abel by Cain can be seen on the gallery. A square Romanesque defense tower with an apse was built around 1240 and the Gothic nave was added around 1340. The pulpit dates from 1678. 1715 was rebuilt and renovated. The galleries and the wooden barrel ceiling were added. The organ dates from 1716. It was built by master organ builder Johann Eberhard Dauphin from Mühlhausen. The painting was done in 1719 by Johannes Kauffuld from Kleinalmerode. In 1900 the tower and the nave roof were renewed and windows were added to the apse. The interior was painted over with white paint. In 1913 the organ was renewed and in 1924 electrical lighting was installed. In 1953 the church painter Kienzle restored the paintings. In 1952 the organ was completely overhauled. In 2000 the church was closed due to the risk of collapse and extensively renovated from 2001 onwards. The reopening took place in 2002. The Protestant church is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

  • Evangelical Church Powerless The church is on the outskirts in the district of Machtlos, 6 km away. It was built from rubble stones in 1851. The key to the church can be found to the right of the entrance door. The organ dates from 1852.
