Roseau is the capital of Dominica.
background
The Carib Indians called this place Sairi. French lumberjacks were the first European residents to be followed by other French settlers. In 1730 they built the first larger church. In 1761 there was the first attack by English sailors. In 1778 the place fell back into French hands for a short time.
In 1768 Roseau was surveyed by the royal engineer Nathaniel Minshall and a first city map was drawn. In the south, a large space was kept free for the Anglican Church, which had been a state church since 1763. In 1781 and 1805 the place was largely destroyed by fires, but rebuilt according to plan. To the south on Victoria Street is Fort Young, a fortification that has been expanded several times and is now used as a hotel. Opposite is St. George's Church from 1820. The building was expanded in 1900 and completely destroyed in 1979 by hurricane "David".
The oldest administration building in Roseau is the post office from 1810. The building of the city administration of Roseau is to be mentioned as one of the last authentic slave trading houses. The oldest guest house on the island was Ogilvy's Guest House in the 1860s, which is now the Sutton Place Hotel.
- Today, 30% of the entire island population lives in the greater Roseau area.
It wasn't until the 1950s that the city began to expand beyond the 19th century borders. In 1972 the coast road from Roseau to Portsmouth was rebuilt, in 1974 the construction of the deep water harbor of Woodbridge Bay began, in 1979 the wharfs were badly damaged by hurricane "David". After the reconstruction, parts of Bay Street were renamed after former Prime Minister Eugenia Charles.
The Roseau River divides the city in two. North of the river are the districts of Goodwill and Potter's Ville and. Morne Daniel is 1 km north of the city.
The plantation in Goodwill was measured with 180 hectares by the Royal British Land Surveyor shortly after 1760 and sold to James Woodbridge, who gave it his name. The administration offices of the government are now located in the old factory building of the plantation. Parts of the old canal system for the sugar mill's water wheel have been preserved to this day and gave Canal Street its name. At the end of the 19th century the plantation became the property of the Potter family, which led to the place name Potter's Ville. In the late 1940s, the government bought the site and built the hospital, prison and residential buildings there.
On the south side of the river is the old town with a chessboard-like course of the street. The districts of Castle Comfort and Reigate adjoin to the southeast. Castle Comfort, called Beaubois in Creole language, was a French plantation owned by the Chevalier de Beaubois family from the mid-18th century.
1 km south of the town center, a road meanders in many curves at a height of over 300 m to the village of Giraudel. A little further south, the same road leads back to the coastal road.

Tourist Attractions
- 1 The botanical garden, on the eastern outskirts, on the site of the former Bath sugar plantation. Tel.: 448-2731. On the slopes of Morne Bruce is 10 hectares. A first plan for this was drawn up in 1889, and two years later the government bought part of the sugar plantation. The first head of the garden was Charles Murray of the Edinburgh Botanic Garden. There are few remains of a fortress. The garden is divided into two areas. Ornamental plants are shown on one side, and new plant varieties are grown in experimental crops on the other. Until the beginning of World War II, it had the reputation of being the best in the West Indies. It was repeatedly damaged by cyclones and since Hurricane David in 1979 it has only been maintained as a park. The parrot house has also been preserved. In 1905 a power station was built next to the botanical garden.
- 2 Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption (Our Lady of Fair Haven Cathedral). The most important Catholic church on the island. In 1732, Father Martel built the first Catholic church on the island, which has had to be renovated twice in the meantime. In May 1766, when the island was only briefly under English ownership, King George III gave permission. the influential French plantation owners to use a four hectare property as a church property for 99 years. At the end of this period, the Catholic Church applied for the land to be transferred, which was granted in 1865. The only exceptions were two smaller plots of land given over to Catholics who later transferred to the Wesleyan Methodists. Originally there was only one wooden structure there. The construction of today's church in Gothic-Romanesque style began around 1800. Hewn volcanic rock was used as building material. The construction had to be interrupted again and again because the financial resources were very low. The front church tower dates from 1855, the eastern tower was added in 1878. The construction work was not completed until 1916.
- St. George´s Anglican Church. The construction of St. George's Anglican Church across from Fort Young was particularly encouraged by Robert Garraway. His son James Garraway was named President of Dominica in the 1860s, a position that today corresponds to that of governor. The family owned the Morne Prosper and Mount Eolus plantations in Portsmouth. Here, too, the first church from around 1820 was destroyed by hurricane "David" in 1979.
- Jean Rhys's birthplace, Cork Street. Author of the novel "Wide Saragasso Sea".
- Best Caribbean Hotel (BCH). The former Best Caribbean Hotel (BCH) has been the seat of the Chinese embassy since 2004.
- The new market, Waterfront corner of River Bank. With international aid, the promenade in the entire area of the harbor front was renewed after the hurricane "David" in 1979, widened for pedestrians and is now called Lady Mary Eugenia Charles Blvd.
- Victoria Memorial Building and Library, Victoria Street. The building was built in 1905 with a donation from the American Andrew Carnegie. Large parts of the house are now used by BDS.
- Court and tax office, High street. The first wooden courthouse was built in 1770. In 1810 it was replaced by a stone building. It was destroyed by arson on June 16, 1979, and rebuilt in 1993.
- Fort Young (Hotel). Built from 1770 to 1783 by the first governor Sir William Young, it was used as a police station until 1964.
- State House, across from Fort Young. The former Government House stands in a large garden. From 1840 to 1979 the governor's offices and apartment were located here. Before that, there was a first government building in the middle of the lawn in 1766. Today the house is used for state receptions and public events, the apartments in the house are available to state guests. The new parliament building connects directly to the south of this property. The first meeting house in the same location was built in 1811 and fell victim to a fire in 1979.
- 3 Dominica Museum, Bay Front at the corner of King George V. Street, on the upper floor above the Tourist Information. Open: Mon - Fri 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Sat 9 a.m. - 12 p.m.Price: Entry 3 EC dollars.
- Old Market. The area where the market was until 1971, today it is called "Old Market". Slaves used to be traded there. Today the craft market for tourists is located there. The Post Office faces Bay Street and the Tourist Information Office is on the other side. A new pier for cruise ships was built there on the sea side.
