Castles and Palaces
- Ribnica Castle
- Žužemberk Castle. The castle suffered from attacks by the Turks several times in the 16th century.
- Kamen Castle, in Novo Mesto.
- Otočec. The only island castle in Slovenia is Otočec, in the middle of the Krka.
- Castle complex Kostel. The second largest in Slovenia.
Monasteries and churches
- St. Rupert. The Gothic church of St. Rupert in Šentrupert was built around 1450 and is one of the most beautiful Gothic church buildings in Slovenia.
- Charterhouse of Pleterje, Drča 1. 8310 Šentjernej. Tel.: 386 7 308 12 25. The last existing Carthusian monastery in Slovenia is the Charterhouse Pleterje, in a valley at the foot of the Gorjanci. Visits are from Monday to Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed on Sundays.

Fruit and wine are grown and sheep, bees and fish are raised. The organically grown fruit products are processed into wine, juice and brandies and also sold. Special features are the pear from Pleterje, which grows in a bottle and is filled with pear brandy, and the monastery spirit, a fruit brandy refined with 49 herbs.
- Matevž is a Slovenian national dish, especially for the Kočevsko region. It is made from potatoes and beans with onions. It is often served with steamed sour beets and, if desired, with meat or bratwurst.
