Number

In general, the Spanish numbering system is quite simple.

For numbers 21 to 29, the "e" from "veinte" is replaced by "i" and the sequence number is added after.

For numbers 31 to 99, tens and units are separated by "y" (e.g. 31: treinta y una; 99: noventa y nueve). Note that "y" is not used to separate hundreds from tens or thousands from hundreds.

From 200 on, hundreds are named using the ordinal cientos (e.g. 200: doscientos), but the numbers 500 (quinientos), 700 (setecientos) and 900 (novecientos) are exceptions to the rule. this rule and needs attention.

Naming thousands is simple, with the ordinal number mil.

From millions onwards, note that plural is used for numbers over 1,000,000. Also note that unlike English, Spanish uses a long scale. Thus, un billón and un trillón are not the same as "one billion" and "one trillion" in English.

How to write date

Dates are written in day-month-year format. All spoken and written, long and short forms follow this pattern:

May 7, 2003
7 de mayo de 2003
October 23, 1997
23 de octubre de 1997

Date-month structure (for example 4 de julio) is usually not abbreviated. In the rare cases where abbreviations are used, the numerical month is not usually used, but rather the first letter. Common examples are:

23-F
23 de febrero, day of a failed coup in Spain (1981)
11-WORLD
11 de septiembre, date of the attack on the WTC twin towers (2001) (and of the 1973 Chilean coup).
