Saul is a village of about 60 inhabitants of the Guyana, lost in the heart of the jungle.
Understand
The village was born from gold panning at the end of XIXe century. Today its inhabitants live mainly from tourism. The village has a small school, a tiny post office and even a "nightclub", the Casino ... It is served by a daily plane that takes food and tourists.

- Very muddy site: plan high hiking shoes or even rain boots in the rainy season.
- Provide disinfectant tablets for the water
By plane
- 1 Saul airfield (IATA : XAUICAO: SOOS) (at the south-eastern exit of the village)
- One company: Air Guyane Express departing from Cayenne. Small twin-engine tour 110 € the round trip over the jungle. You are entitled to 10 kg checked baggage 5 kg in hand luggage. From the airport you can reach the village of Saul on foot by a layon in the forest, while the luggage is taken by car and deposited under a carbet in the center.
Circulate
- Saul is the place to hike par excellence, it is mostly walked there, even if the locals use the quad.
Do
- Many well signposted hiking trails all around the village. Plan the day for "Rock boat", nice route of 14 km with passage along a pleasant cove (possibility of fishing under the rock in the shape of a boat) on the way a little corner of paradise the Kanawa grand carbet gîte for 10 people with kitchen and the Popote cove for swimming. From Kanawa it is possible to follow the beginning of the old corn carbet trail without major problem to the place called Mitan carbet and even to Calabash cove.
- The afternoon is enough if you choose "The smoke" course of 10 km with a few crest passages or the "big trees" circuit which goes from big trees to big trees.
To buy
- Small grocery shop (in front of the Casino) – If it's closed, just ask at the house next to the Casino, the boss will come and open the doors for you. Price a little higher than in the rest of Guyana but reasonable, justified by the freight by plane.
- Grocery store (district of Abattis) much more often open (January 2020)
Eat
- A few homestay restaurants. To count 15 € per person. You must reserve in the afternoon to eat local products in the evening.
- Restaurant in a pleasant setting above the church run by Philippe, a metropolitan who has traveled quite a bit in South America.
- Or after doing some shopping in one of the two grocery stores (mainly cans)
Have a drink / Go out
- Bar above the church run by Philippe, pleasant terrace, reasonable price.
- On Saturday evening, don't miss the party at the Casino. All the young people of the village (from 4 to 40 years old) meet there to dance the night away. It’s not for drinking, so make sure you have plenty to keep.
- August 21 is the village festival.
Housing
- Possibility of staying with the locals
- Carbet hammock chez Fred (run by Philippe), exceptional setting in a beautiful garden, very quiet, 2 carbets for 10 people. Bring your hammocks, everything else is on site: shower (fresh), gas stove, cutlery, kitchen utensils, fireplace for grilling. You'll even be provided with filtered water and some fruit.
- many other accommodations in hammock carbets: chez kami, carbets du bord, le relai du cheeseager ... Some offer rooms with beds or even the evening meal.
Communicate
Please note that the mobile phone only goes through certain operators and only in a few places in the village. Internet is available via wifi in some carbets (but be reasonable, because the volume is limited and expensive for your host).
Manage the day-to-day
Security
- Very quiet village
Health
- Same instructions as in the rest of Guyana. Cases of malaria and dengue fever have been identified, so provide preventive treatment as well as repellents and mosquito nets.
