Tourist Attractions

  • 1  Fortaleza de Sagres, south of the village on Rua da Fortaleza. Fortification on the 300-meter-wide, one kilometer-wide rocky peninsula of Ponta de Sagres. Legend has it that the seafaring school Heinrich the Seafarer was located here (in fact, it was more likely to be in Lagos). The original fortification was destroyed in the attack by Francis Drake in 1587 and the earthquake in 1755, the current fortress wall dates from 1793. Otherwise there are only a few old buildings worth seeing, such as the small church Igreja da Nossa Senhora da Graça from the 16th century a golden wooden altar. The ruins of many other buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries were unfortunately removed in the 1960s. In 1921 a compass rose (rosa dos ventos) with a diameter of 43 meters, possibly from the time of Heinrich the Navigator, was discovered directly behind the entrance, which could have been used for navigational calculations at the time. A visit to the facility is particularly worthwhile for the beautiful hike along the cliffs, on which the fearless fishermen balance, to the not so beautiful lighthouse at the southern tip, and the view of the Cabo de São Vicente, which you can enjoy. For 1 € there is a worthwhile brochure in various languages (including English) in the museum shop (not at the cash desk).Open: May - Sep 9.30 a.m. - 8 p.m. Oct - Apr 9.30 a.m. - 5.30 p.m.Price: Admission 3 €, reduced (including students up to 25 years) 1.50 €.
  • 2  Cabo de Sao Vicente, west of the village at the end of the N 268. The cape is the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe. Here is a 62 meter high lighthouse from 1846 and a former monastery, which now houses a small museum dedicated to seafaring (Museu dos Faróis, Tue - Sun 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., admission € 3). Unfortunately, you can't get right up to the western tip, as it is built up or closed). But to the northeast you have a beautiful view of the cliffs and the surging waves. With good shoes you can go out onto the cliffs (in front of the entrance on the right hand side). There are numerous food and souvenir stands in the car park at the Cape.
  • 3  Fortaleza do Beliche. On the way to Cabo de São Vicente, on the N268, you can see the remains of Fortaleza do Beliche, built in 1632, which threatens to plunge into the sea and is therefore partially restricted area. You can stop in a small parking lot in front of the fort and visit a small part of the outer walls. From there a path leads down to a cliff in front of it. Signs in various places indicate the risk of falling.
