Saint-Étienne-au-Mont, in the heart of the European megalopolis, is a municipality diversified by its landscapes, its history, and its heritage. The Municipality has sections (villages):
- Brick Bridge, urban area.
- Ecault, Natural, forest, and agricultural area.
Story
antiquity
During Antiquity, the site was occupied by the Morins. The Liane was a river of abundant water and its estuary became at each tide a veritable lake which extended as far as Isques, a village which also takes its name from a Celtic word meaning "water". At low tide, the lake gave way to an impassable lagoon.
To connect the two banks and connect the Outreau peninsula and the whole country south of the Liane with Boulogne which was then called Gesoriacum, and also to break the violence of the flow, a bridge was built downstream from Isques , where the valley narrows. It is this work of art which is at the origin of the Pont-de-Briquoise agglomeration and which gave it its name. A phrase from the Latin historian Florus suggests that this bridge was built between AD 12 and 9 BC, by Claudius Drusus, the brother of Emperor Tiberius.
In addition, a small Gallo-Roman establishment, dating from the 1st and 2nd century, was brought to light in Écault in 2004. In addition to everyday objects, it was found around the foundations of six houses, deposits of slag. suggesting a steel craft industry.
Middle Ages
The toponym Pont de Briques appears for the first time in the form of Pont de Brike in a charter of 1278 which specifies the limits of the suburb of Boulogne. The bridge supported a road which linked Amiens to Boulogne. This route entered Boulonnais by crossing the Canche at the Attin ferry, then reached Pont de Briques via Frencq, the hamlet of Chemin à Neufchâtel, the forest of Hardelot, Choquel, the disappeared hamlet of Sandune, Audisque and the rue au Sand.
A 13th century document reports the presence of a church on the “mosier Saint-Étienne” around 1121. This church was the basis of the current church of Écault. The monument was largely destroyed in the 14th century by the English. In 1630, the priest Louis Macquet attempted to rebuild the church but did not achieve a suitable result.
Napoleonic period Between 1803 and 1805
Napoleon Bonaparte set up an army camp around Boulogne-sur-Mer, with the aim of preparing an attack against the United Kingdom. The Boulogne camp thus hosted the Army of the Ocean Coasts, which was to become the Grande Armée. The Emperor took up residence in the small castle of Pont-de-Briques, which is currently on the territory of the municipality of Saint-Léonard. The choice of this residence was motivated by the ease of access to Boulogne and its camp by crossing the Liane.
Twentieth century
The municipality of Saint-Étienne-au-Mont was born from the merger of Pont de Briques and Écault.
Today
During the Second World War, the town, like the other towns in Boulonnais, suffered a lot of damage. In particular, only a few houses have survived in Écault after the conflict. Currently, the town benefits from the main services: shops, media library, college, etc. Tourism, motivated by the proximity of the Opal Coast, is an economic activity of a certain importance: Saint-Étienne-au-Mont has several lodges and a 258 pitches camping-caravan site located between the dunes and the forest of Écault.
