Saint-Francois (creole: Mustard wanswà) is a parish in Guadeloupe.

background

Manor house of a sugar plantation

In 1683 the administrative district of Châteaux was founded by Capuchin monks, and Saint-Francois became the capital. It is 37 km from Pointe-a-Pitre. In 1790 4,570 people lived in the area. Most of the plantations first grew cotton. In the years after the French Revolution, many sugar cane plantations came into being. In addition to the 70 cotton plantations, there were now 36 sugar cane plantations that operated 41 sugar mills. After the abolition of slavery, around 340 Indian contract workers came to the region in December 1854. By 1870 the place already had 6,500 inhabitants. In 1928 a hurricane destroyed almost all buildings. There were 80 dead and over 200 wounded. On September 17, 1989, Saint-Francois was again badly damaged by the hurricane "Hugo". The banana port has now been restored. The town center is formed by the market and the Notre Dame de Guadeloupe cathedral from the 18th century, the facade of which is a listed building. The main shopping streets are Rue du Cours Nolivos and Rue du Docteur Cabre. Along the road from the center to the fishing port you will find a number of typical restaurants. There are over 75 restaurants throughout the village.

The tourist center with boutiques, a casino, the “Grande Saline” marina and the golf course is to the east of the center. Across from the southern exit of the marina, the new Base Nautique, a collection of water sports facilities, was built.

The airfield is located behind the golf course.

The county road D 118 leads to the most easterly point of the island, the Pointe des Châteaux.

beaches

Pointe des Châteaux
  • Anse a l'Eau. Beautiful, small bay with white sand, framed by rocks on one side. The access is at km 5 on the road from Saint-Francois to Moule.
  • Plage de l'Anse a la Gourde. Long, shady sandy beach with a few rocks. There are a lot of campers here, especially on weekends. There is a restaurant. Access is possible from the Pointe des Chateaux street.
  • Plage de l´Anse des Chateaux, on the eastern tip of the island. Very wide beach with a wide panorama. The sea here has strong Atlantic swell and is only suitable for good swimmers and surfers. The name Pointe des Châteaux refers to the bizarre rock formation reminiscent of the ruins of a castle. At the highest point there is a summit cross, from this point you have a wide view over Guadeloupe and the neighboring island of La Desirade. There is also a bus going to the end of the island, passing several restaurants on its way.
  • Plage de l'Anse Tarare. Nudist beach. Access is via the Pointe des Chateaus Straße.
  • Plage de la Marina. Public beach with fishing boats in the center of the village. Here you can rent all kinds of water sports equipment.
  • Plague des Raisins Claires. Long jagged beach off the main road. The sea sometimes has strong waves. Many locals and campers can be found there on public holidays. There is an Indian cemetery nearby.
  • Pointe tartans. This secluded beach is a popular nudist beach.
