Saint-Jean-d'Angély is a municipality and a city of Charente Maritime, in the South West of France. Established on the banks of the Button, it is the capital of Lower Saintonge.

Understand

Important stronghold and religious center in medieval times, it was built around its royal abbey of Saint-Jean-Baptiste. It retains from its rich past a preserved historic center, made up of picturesque alleys lined with half-timbered houses. Symbol of municipal power, the belfry or "clock tower" (XVe century) echoes the baroque towers of the new abbey church (XVIIIe century), which remained unfinished.
