Saint Savin is a french Small town in the department Vienne. It is particularly relevant because of its Romanesque abbey church with valuable medieval wall paintings, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Saint-Savin belongs to the arrondissement of Montmorillon and is the capital of the canton of Saint-Savin.
The city lies on the Gartempe River. Here the Vieux Pont crosses the river, and its breakwater shows that the river does not always flow peacefully.

By plane
The nearest commercial airports are Poitiers-Biard Airport(IATA: PIS) , 55 km west) and Limoges airport(IATA: LIG), 95 km south), but they only have a small selection of connections. The nearest major international airport is Bordeaux airport(IATA: BOD), 260 km southwest).
By train
Saint-Savin has no rail connection. You have to be in Poitiers or Chateauroux change to the bus. The fastest connection from Paris by train and bus takes 2:20 hours; from Bordeaux 2:40 hours (each time TGV to Poitiers, then bus).
Regional trains on the Poitiers – Le Dorat line also stop at Montmorillon Station, 20 km away.
By bus
"Regionalexpress" buses (Car TER) of the French state railway SNCF run three times a day from Poitiers to Saint-Savin (journey time 45 minutes); from Châteauroux twice a day (1:25 hours).
In addition, bus line 103 connects the Lignes en Vienne Saint-Savin twice a day with Le Blanc and Chauvigny, on request also from / to Poitiers (call the day before until 5 p.m.: 05 49 46 27 45).
In the street
Saint-Savin is located on the well-developed D951 between Poitiers and Châteauroux. The D 5 from Montmorillon and Angles-sur-l'Anglin runs through the neighboring town of Saint-Germain (on the other side of the river). It is 43 km from Poitiers and takes around 50 minutes to drive (follow signs for Châteauroux / Chauvigny).
Coming from Paris and Orléans, take the A71 / A20 towards Toulouse to the junction Poitiers / St-Gaultier, then via the D951 to Saint-Savin.
By boat

Public buses only run twice a day, so a car is urgently recommended in order to be mobile in the area.

- The Romanesque 1 Abbey church (Abbaye de Saint-Savin), the construction of which began in the middle of the 11th century. It houses many frescoes from the 11th and 12th centuries. The wall paintings are the best preserved fresco cycle in France and are often referred to as the “Romanesque Sistine Chapel”. In 1983 she was included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site recorded.

- Brenne Nature Park. The Brenne Regional Nature Park (over 1700 km² wetland protection zone, which serves as a habitat for a variety of water birds) begins approx. 7 km northeast of Saint-Savin (towards Le Blanc).
- Angles-sur-l’Anglin. 17 km north, a picturesque place with castle ruins on a rock, water mill on the river, picturesque old houses, is considered one of the most beautiful villages in France.
- Chauvigny. 19 km to the west (20 minutes by bus), medieval town, picturesquely situated on a hill; Fortress, historic center with traditional craft workshops, Romanesque church Saint-Pierre, capitals in the choir decorated with ornate red and white stone carvings.
- Château de Touffou. Bonnes (26 km west of Saint-Savin), Renaissance hunting lodge of the French kings.
- Poitiers. 43 km to the west, prefecture of the Vienne department and unofficial capital of the historical region Poitou, university city and city of art and history with several Romanesque churches, cathedral, palace of justice and the amusement park Futuroscope.
